이스라엘에 나타난 거인 골리앗
사무엘상 17장에서 이스라엘과 블레셋 사이에 전쟁이 일어났을 때, 블레셋 진영에서 싸움을 돋우기 위해 골리앗이 나타났습니다. 그는 키가 여섯 규빗 한 뼘으로, 약 3미터나 되는 거인이었습니다. 골리앗은 머리에 놋 투구를 썼고, 몸에는 아주 두꺼운 갑옷을 입었습니다. 그리고 베틀 채만한 큰 창을 들고 있었습니다. 이스라엘 사람들은 골리앗이 나타나자 어느 누구 할 것 없이 두려워하며 떨었습니다. 그런데 거기에 골리앗을 두려워 하지 않는 사람이 하나 있었습니다. 바로 다윗입니다. 다윗이 이스라엘 왕 사울에게 말했습니다.
“제가 아버지의 양을 지킬 때, 사자나 곰이 와서 양 새끼를 물고 가면 따라가서 그것을 치고 새끼를 구했습니다. 또 사자나 곰이 일어나 저를 해치려고 하면 그놈의 수염을 잡고 쳐 죽였습니다. 제가 사자와 곰도 쳤으니 살아계신 하나님의 군대를 모욕한 저 블레셋 사람을 못 치겠습니까?”
다윗은 자신이 말한 대로 골리앗에게 담대히 나아갔고, 그를 쳐서 죽이고 이스라엘 군대를 승리로 이끌었습니다.

다윗이 다른 사람들과 달랐던 점
우리가 믿는 하나님은 천지를 창조하신 능력이 크신 분입니다. 우리는 하나님의 자녀입니다. 그렇기 때문 에 하나님의 능력이 우리를 지키십 니다. 문제는, 하나님이 우리 눈에 보이지 않는다는 것입니다. 우리 눈에는 키가 엄청나게 큰 골리앗만 보입니다. 그래서 두려워하고 벌벌 떱니다. 그렇다면 골리앗이 이길까요, 하나님이 이기실까요? 물론 하나님이 이기십니다. 그런데 그 하나님이 우리 눈에 보이지 않아서 우리가 하 나님을 믿는다고 하면서도 골리앗을 두려워하는 것입니다.
다윗이 다른 사람들과 달랐던 점은 그의 마음에 하나님을 믿는 믿음이 있었다는 것입니다. 믿음은 사람의 마음 안에서 만들어집니다. 다윗은 그 마음에 하나님을 믿는 믿음이 형성되기 시작했고, 믿음이 자라 견고하게 자리를 잡았습니다. 그 점이 다른 사람들과 달랐습니다. 다윗은 골리앗 앞에 서기 전에 곰이나 사자와 싸워 이기며 하나님이 일하시는 것을 이미 여러 번 경험했습니다. 그랬기 때문에 곰과 사자에게서 자신을 지키고 이기게 하신 하나님이 골리앗도 이기게 해주실 것을 믿었습니다.

작은 문제부터 믿음으로 이겨 나가면
우리가 하는 신앙생활이 이와 같습니다. 하나님을 믿는 믿음이 우리 앞에 닥치는 어려움을 이기게 합니다. 믿음이 없으면, 하나님에 대해아무리 많이 알아도 문제가 닥쳐오면 두려워집니다. 하나님은 우리에게 새 일을 행하십니다. 하나님을 믿는 믿음으로 걸음을 내디디면 하나님이 역사하십니다. 그렇기 때문에 우리도 다윗처럼 처음에는 작은 문제부터 하나하나 믿음으로 이겨나가면 믿음이 점점 견고해져서 큰 문제도 이길 수 있습니다. 처음부터 마음에 믿음이 있어서 믿음으로 산 사람은 아무도 없습니다. 어떤 일 앞에서 하나님을 믿는 믿음으로 걸음을 내딛고, 그때 하나님이 역사하시는 것을 경험하면서 믿음이 자라는 것입니다.

어려움을 통해서 믿음이 자란다
누구나 살다 보면 어려운 일을 만나기 마련입니다. 다윗도 양떼를 지키면서 곰과 사자를 만나 위험한 일을 많이 겪었습니다. 하지만 그때마다 ‘이번에 내가 죽는 줄 알았는데 하나님이 도우셨어!’ 하고 하나님이 자신을 도우시는 것을 맛보았습니다. 다윗은 골리앗을 죽이고 군대장관이 된 뒤로도 많은 어려움을 겪었습니다. 사울 왕이 쉴 새 없이 다윗을 죽이려고 해서 계속 도망다 녀야 했습니다. 결국 다윗은 블레셋 땅으로 가서 시글락에 머물렀습니다. 그런데 그곳에서도 어려움을 만났습니다. 아말렉 족속이 시글락을 공격해 성을 불태우고 여자와 아이들을 다 사로잡아 갔습니다. 다윗과 그를 따르는 군인들이 전쟁터에 갔다가 시글락으로 돌아와서 그 광경을 보고 울고 또 울었습니다. 다윗을 따르던 군인들은 다윗을 원망하며 돌로 쳐 죽이려고 했습니다.
다윗은 절박한 상황에서 하나님께 기도했습니다. 그러자 하나님께서 “시글락을 침노한 사람들을 반드시 따라잡고 잃은 처자식들을 정녕 도로 찾으리라.”고 하셨습니다.
다윗은 일어나 사람들을 이끌고 추적을 시작했습니다. 도중에 길에 쓰러져 있는 한 청년을 만났습니다. 그는 아말렉 사람의 종이었다가 병이 들어 버림받은 청년이었습니다. 그가 아말렉 족속이 시글락을 불사르고 도망갔다는 사실을 알려주었습니다. 그리고 아말렉 족속이 머무는 곳으로 인도해주었습니다. 그래서 다윗은 아말렉 족속을 쳐서 진멸하고 처자식을 다 찾아왔습니다.

하나님의 사람이 걷는 길
이것이 하나님의 사람이 걷는 길입니다. 우리는 어려움을 만나고, 하나님은 그 어려움을 통해서 우리 믿음이 자라게 하십니다. 그래서 이 땅 위에 믿음의 사람이 날로 많아집니다. 다윗이나 베드로 같은 믿음의 사람들은 하나님을 믿고 달려 나갔고, 그때마다 하나님의 역사가 일어났습니다. 그래서 견고한 믿음의 사람이 되었습니다. 우리도 믿음을 가지고 하나님의 뜻을 따라가면 하나님이 일하십니다.

Goliath the Giant Appears in Israel
When war broke out between Israel and the Philistines in 1 Samuel chapter 17 in the Bible, Goliath came out from the Philistine camp to fight. He was a giant, whose height was six cubits and a span, about three meters tall. Goliath wore a brass helmet on his head, and very thick armor on his body. He carried a large spear that was like a weaver’s beam. When Goliath appeared, the Israelites were all afraid and in great fear. But there was one man who was not afraid of Goliath; that was David. David said to Saul, the king of Israel. “When I was watching over my father’s sheep, if a lion or a bear came and took a lamb, I went out after it and beat it and saved the lamb. And when the lion or bear tried to attack me, I caught it by its beard, beat it, and killed it. I beat both the lion and the bear, and this Philistine who defies the armies of the living God will be like one of those animals.” David went boldly toward Goliath, and as he had said, struck him down, killed him, and led the Israeli army to victory.

What Made David Different from Others
The God we believe in is the God of great power who has created the heavens and the earth. We are children of God. That is why the power of God protects us. The problem is that because God is invisible to us, all we see is Goliath, who is incredibly tall. That is why we become afraid and terrified. Then, who will win, Goliath or God? Of course, God wins. But since God is invisible, though we say we believe in God, we are still afraid of Goliath. What made David different from others was that he had faith in God in his heart. Faith is built in a person’s heart. David’s faith in God began to form in his heart, and then his faith grew and became firmly established. This was different from other people. Before David stood before Goliath, he had already experienced God’s work several times by fighting and defeating a bear or a lion. Because of this, he believed that God, who had protected him from the bear and the lion, would also help him defeat Goliath.

If We Start Overcoming Small Problems with Faith
The spiritual life that we live is likewise. Faith in God helps us overcome the difficulties we face. If you do not have faith, no matter how much you know about God, you become afraid when problems arise. God is doing something new for us. If you step forward with faith in God, He works. Therefore, like David, if we begin by overcoming small problems one by one by faith, then our faith will grow stronger and we will be able to overcome big problems. There is no one who lives by faith because they have faith in their heart from the beginning. When you take a step forward with faith in God for certain problems, and experience God working at that time, faith grows.

Faith Grows Through Difficulties
Everyone is bound to face difficulties in life. David also suffered many dangers when a bear or a lion came while watching over his sheep. ‘I thought I was going to die this time, but God helped me!’ Every time, he was able to feel the helping hand of God. After killing Goliath and becoming the commander of the army, David still had many difficulties; he had to keep running because King Saul constantly tried to kill him. In the end, David went to the land of the Philistines and stayed in Ziklag. But he also encountered difficulties there. The Amalekites attacked Ziklag, burned the city, and took all the women and children captive. David and his men had gone off to war but when they returned to Ziklag, they wept and wept when they saw what had happened. The soldiers who followed David resented him and wanted to stone him to death. David was in a desperate situation so he prayed to God. Then God answered him, “You will surely overtake those who have invaded Ziklag, and will surely recover all the lost wives and children.” David got up, led the men, and began to pursue them. On the way, they met a young man who had collapsed on the road. He was a young man who had been a slave to the Amalekites but had been abandoned because he had fallen ill. He told them that the Amalekites had burned Ziklag and fled. So, he led them to the place where the Amalekites were and David defeated the Amalekites and destroyed them, and recovered all the wives and children.

The Path of God’s People
This is the path the people of God walk. We face difficulties, and God makes our faith grow through those difficulties. Therefore, the number of people of faith on this earth increases day by day. People of faith such as David and Peter believed in God and moved forward, and God worked every time. That’s how they became people of strong and steadfast faith. If we also have faith and follow God’s will, God will work.
