Thy Brother Shall Rise Again

 Mary Was Waiting for Jesus
Lazarus and his two younger sisters Martha and Mary lived in Bethany, Israel. Suddenly, Lazarus fell ill. Martha and Mary sent some people to Jesus to inform him that Lazarus was sick. Mary thought, ‘Jesus will come soon to heal my brother’s sickness. My brother will be healthy again, and Jesus will spend a good time with us.’ But the people who went to Jesus returned without him.
“Why didn’t Jesus come back with you? Is he too busy?”

“Jesus only said, ‘This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby’ and did not come with us.”
When Mary heard the words Jesus had said, she thought, ‘Ah, then my brother will not die.’
According to what Jesus said, her brother should have been healed and able to eat and work, but instead Lazarus’s disease had gotten worse and worse.
‘Why isn’t Jesus coming? What if my brother dies?’
Mary’s heart kept getting anxious, but Jesus still had not come. Her brother’s sickness became more serious each day and Mary’s heart of regret towards Jesus grew bigger.
‘Why can’t he just come and heal this sickness and go? Does Jesus really love us? It feels as if he doesn’t care whether my brother lives or dies.’

The Faith in Jesus Is Broken
Then Lazarus died. Mary had mixed feelings of sorrow for her brother’s death and regret towards Jesus.
‘My brother is dead. How will we live without him? Why didn’t Jesus come? He could have healed his sickness and then left to do other works…’

As the regret for Jesus grew in Mary’s heart, distrust toward Him began to rise. She could not control her growing sadness along with her faltering faith in Jesus. No matter how hard she tried, she could not control her heart. She cried and cried.
Because Jesus is the Son of God, nothing is a problem when we only believe in Him. That is why the evil spirit does the work of breaking the faith in Jesus in our heart. Satan took the opportunity of Lazarus’s death to fill Mary’s heart with disbelief in Jesus.
Satan not only did this to Mary and Martha. He comes to our heart and constantly makes us distrust and resent Jesus. And he fills our heart with a heart different from Jesus.

How Nice Would It Be to Have Believed the Words of Jesus!
Jesus came to Bethany only four days after Lazarus’s death. Mary did not go out to greet Jesus because she was so disappointed at Him. Martha went out alone to greet Jesus and said,
“Jesus, if you were here, my brother wouldn’t have died. But now I know, that even now, whatsoever you ask of God, God will give it to you.”

Then Jesus said, “Thy brother shall rise again.”
Hearing these words, Martha could not simply accept them as they were. If she had believed the words of Jesus saying “thy brother shall rise again” as is, she may have answered like this:
Jesus, my brother will live again? Oh, thank you! If he lives again, we won’t have to be sad. Jesus, my brother is in the grave. Please go save him quickly!”

How nice would it be if Martha had forsaken all her thoughts and believed the words of Jesus!
If she had accepted Jesus’ words, her brother who had already died in her heart, would live again and Martha would have one heart with Jesus. She would have gratefully accepted that her brother will live again.

Even Now, Jesus…
Not only Mary and Martha, but also many Jews who came to comfort them and the disciples of Jesus could not accept His words in their hearts. So Jesus groaned in the spirit and wept.
Even now, Jesus would be sad. Just as how Mary and Martha mourned for their brother’s death because they could not accept the words Jesus spoke, ‘thy brother shall rise again’, there are many Christians who do not accept His words either. It is recorded in the Bible countless times that Jesus was crucified to wash away all our sins, but many still say that they are sinners. They believe the thought that they are sinners rather than believing the word.

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:” (Romans 3:23-24)
We must believe the word of God saying that Jesus was crucified for our sin and died, therefore our sins have been washed.
