Mary Poured Ointment on Jesus’ Feet
In John chapter 11 in the Bible, Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. How is it possible to express all that emotion in words? Mary and Martha were grateful to Jesus for saving their brother so they could live with him again. They were so thankful when they thought of Jesus that they decided they wanted to do something for Him.
One day, Mary remembered Jesus said, “The Son of man must suffer many things and be killed.” Mary thought, ‘Yes, then I should prepare Jesus for His burial. I have to get the ointment ready!’
Finally, Jesus came to Bethany. Mary and Martha held a feast for Him. The food was served and it was a joyful time. That’s when Mary took a very precious ointment and poured it on Jesus’ feet. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. Everyone was surprised.
“What is this smell?”
“It smells like perfume.”
“What kind of perfume smells so good?”
“It might be spikenard perfume. I’ve only heard about it, but never smelled it myself.”

Judas Iscariot Who Had a Great Interest in Money
Judas Iscariot was there.
‘This is spikenard ointment. This amount must have cost more than 300 pence; why did she pour this expensive ointment on Jesus’ feet? This is absolutely ridiculous!’
While everyone else was enjoying the scent in gratitude, Judas complained, “Why wasn’t this ointment sold for 300 pence and given to the poor?”
When the people heard what Judas Iscariot said they probably thought, ‘This perfume costs 300 pence? Is spikenard perfume really that expensive? If so, then pouring it on Jesus’ feet is indeed a waste.’
Their thoughts were drawn to what Judas had said. People who do not think are easily taken in by what others say. However, Jesus said, “Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.”
Jesus continued, “Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.”
After hearing Jesus’ words, Judas should have thought, ‘I was wrong. Mary’s thoughts were deep, so she prepared this expensive spikenard ointment for Jesus’ burial. I’m a man who only cares about money and Mary is truly a person of faith!’ However, Judas did not think like this.
‘Jesus, she could have opened it so people could smell it and then sold it to help the poor. If not, at least she could have used just a little. What a waste!’ It seems that this kind of thought entered the heart of Judas Iscariot.

Steppingstone to Step Up to the High Hardwood Floor
In the past, a section of hardwood flooring was placed at the entrance to the house where people went in. But the hardwood floor was placed quite high from the ground, so it was not easy to step up to it. So, they put a 20-30cm tall steppingstone in front of the hardwood floor. Then, anyone could easily step onto the floor if they used the steppingstone. The same is true for the world of our hearts. Difficult thoughts are not easy to think about, but having a ‘steppingstone’ makes it easier to think about them.
We are saved by the blood Jesus shed on the cross. Many people still live in sin, but I have been forgiven of my sins through the love of God. Although I am not well educated and have no money, the more I think about being forgiven of my sins, the more grateful I am. Just as a steppingstone makes it easier to step up to the hardwood floor, if I am soaked in gratefulness of the forgiveness of my sins through Jesus’ blood, it is not easy to flow in a fleshly direction because my heart is closer to God. However, those who do not have thankfulness in their heart, even though they received the forgiveness of sins, will have an uncomfortable heart towards Jesus.

One Tiny Thought I Left in My Heart
‘Oh, my thoughts were really wrong! I was only thinking about money, but Mary knew that Jesus would die soon and prepared for the burial in advance. How could she have thought that? I am so ashamed of myself. Even though I am Jesus’ disciple, I only thought about money.’ If Judas Iscariot had had such a heart, he wouldn’t have accepted the thought from Satan to sell Jesus.
There are so many conditions around us for us to be grateful. When we collect those thankful things and keep them in our heart, it is easy for Jesus to work in us. On the contrary, when our heart is full of worldly thoughts, we will hear Satan’s voice and walk the path of destruction. It’s only one tiny thought that makes us do precious work like Mary or leads us to a cursed path like Judas Iscariot.
