여유를 좋아하는 사람들
사람은 누구나 여유로운 삶을 마음에 그립니다. 바쁘게만 살지 않고 조금씩 쉬기도 하고, 한가하게 하고 싶은 것을 하며 사는 것을 원합니다. 돈도 여유가 있어서 원하는 것을 사고 외식도 종종 하면서 살기를 바랍니다. 그런데 성경을 보면, 다윗은 여유 없이 살았습니다. 블레셋이 골리앗을 앞세워 이스라엘에 쳐들어왔을 때, 다윗이 나가서 골리앗을 죽였습니다. 다윗은 이후에도 사울 왕이 보내는 곳마다 가서 지혜롭게 행해, 사울이 다윗을 군대의 지휘관으로 삼았습니다. 이스라엘이 전쟁에서 승리하고 돌아올 때 수많은 여인들이 소고를 들고 나와 노래하고 춤을 추며 환영했습니다. “사울이 죽인 사람은 천천이요, 다윗이 죽인 사람은 만만이로다.” 사울은 그 소리를 듣고 굉장히 불쾌했습니다. 마음에 분노가 가득 차서 그때부터 다윗을 죽이려고 했습니다. 

급박한 상황 속에서 산 다윗
하루는 악신이 사울에게 힘 있게 내려 사울이 왕궁에서 정신없이 헛소리를 했습니다. 다윗은 그런 사울을 위해 수금을 탔습니다. 그때 사울이 들고 있던 창을 다윗에게 던졌습니다. 그 뒤로도 사울은 다윗을 죽이려고 했습니다. 다윗은 이스라엘 땅에서 살 수가 없어서, 어쩔 수 없이 적국인 블레셋으로 도망을 갔습니다. 그곳에서도 다윗은 늘 긴장을 하고 살았습니다. 블레셋 땅에서 다윗은 외진 시글락 성에서 살았습니다. 한번은 다윗이 함께 있는 남자들과 전쟁터에 갔다가 와서 보니, 시글락 성이 불타고 여자들과 아이들이 다 사로잡혀가고 없었습니다. 다윗과 함께 있던 사람들이 그 상황을 보고 소리 높여 울다가, 너무 슬퍼서 다윗을 돌로 쳐서 죽이려고 했습니다. 이처럼 다윗은 계속 급박한 상황 속에서 살아야 했기에 잠시도 여유를 가질 수 없었습니다.

전쟁터에 나가지 않은 다윗
그 뒤, 사울 왕이 전쟁터에서 죽고 다윗이 왕이 되었습니다. 다윗은 사방의 적들을 물리치고 점점 영토 를 넓혀갔습니다. 하나님의 능력으로 모든 대적을 파했을 때, 다윗은 비로소 삶에 여유가 생겼습니다. 걱정하거나 긴장하지 않고 살 수 있게 된 것입니다. 여유가 생기자 다윗이 이전과 다르게 행하기 시작했 습니다. 사무엘하 11장에서 이스라엘과 암몬 사이에 전쟁이 벌어졌습니다. 그때 다윗은 요압과 신하들과 군대를 전쟁터에 보내고 자신은 왕궁에 남았습니다. 이제는 힘든 전쟁터에 가지 않아도 된다고 생각한 것입니다. 사무엘하 11장 2절에 보면, 다윗이 저녁때 잠자리에서 일어났습 니다. 왜 아침이 아닌 저녁 때 일어 났을까요? 아마도 전날 밤새도록 술을 마시며 놀았던 것 같습니다. 낮에는 늘어지게 자다가 저녁에 일어났어도, 일어나자마자 신하들을 불러서 전쟁이 어떤 상황인지 보고 받고 어떻게 해야 전쟁에서 승리할 수 있는지 의논했어야 했습니다. 그런데 다윗은 그렇게 하지 않았습니다. 다윗은 침상에서 일어나 왕궁 지붕 위로 올라가서 거닐었습니다. 그곳에서 내려다보니 한 여자가 목욕하고 있는 광경이 눈에 들어왔습니다. 그 여자는 자기 부하인 우리아의 아내였습니다. 다윗은 그 여자가 아름다워 보여서 불러다 동침했습니다. 그리고 여자를 돌려보냈는데 여자가 임신을 했습니다.

여유를 부린 결과
그동안 다윗은 어떤 일이 있든지 하나님께 물었습니다. 그 문제도 어떻게 해야 할지 하나님께 물어야 했 습니다. 그런데 그때에는 하나님께 묻지 않고 자신의 생각을 따라 행했습니다. 자신의 죄를 숨기기 위해 우리아를 전쟁터에서 죽게 만든 것입니다. 이 일은 다윗의 삶에 말할 수 없 이 큰 고통을 가져다주었습니다. 하나님이 선지자 나단을 다윗에게 보내서 다윗을 책망하셨습니다. “어찌하여 네가 여호와의 말씀을 업신여기고 악을 행하였느뇨? 네가 우리아를 죽이고 그 처를 빼앗아 네 처를 삼았도다. 그런즉 칼이 네 집 에 영영히 떠나지 아니하리라.” 이 말씀대로 다윗은 아들 압살롬 이 자신을 대적하는 등 말로 표현할 수 없는 고통을 겪어야 했습니다.

하나님을 위해 사는 삶
우리는 예수 그리스도의 군사들입니다. 복음을 위해 전쟁을 하는 군사들이기 때문에 마음을 다해서 살아야 합니다. 그런데 여유롭고 느긋하게 살고 싶은 마음이 많습니다. 그러면 여유를 즐기는 동안 어렵고 슬픈 일이 생긴다는 것을 기억해야 합니다. 예수님의 제자들은 고난도 겪고, 핍박도 받고, 배고픔도 겪으면서 살았습니다. 바울이나 베드로 같 은 귀한 하나님의 종들은 여유 없이 어렵게 살면서 하나님을 섬겼습니 다. 여유를 가지고 사는 것이 좋아 보이지만 여유는 사람을 타락하게 만들고 신앙을 파멸로 이끌어갑니 다. 어렵더라도 여유가 없는 사람 들이 타락하지 않고 오랫동안 하나님을 위해 살았습니다. 이제 우리 모두 하나님을 위해 여유를 없애고, 어려워도 하나님을 위해 살 수 있는 감사를 배워야 합니다.

People Who Like to Have Spare Time
Everyone dreams of having an easy life; no one wants to live a hectic life. Sometimes they want to slow down and live a life of doing things they want to do. They wish to have enough money to afford all the things they want to buy and eat out often. However, when we read in the Bible, David lived a life without time to enjoy anything. When the Philistines attacked Israel with Goliath in the front, David stepped up and killed him. From then on, David went to every place where King Saul sent him, acted wisely and Saul appointed him the commander of the army. When Israel returned from victory in the war, the women came out from all the cities, singing and dancing with tabrets to welcome them. “Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.”
What they said displeased Saul and his heart became filled with rage so, from that point on, he continually tried to kill David.

David Living in an Urgent Situation
One day, an evil spirit came upon Saul and he frantically prophesied throughout his kingdom. David took a harp and was playing it for the king when Saul threw a javelin he was holding at David. After that, Saul continuously tried to kill David. David could not live in Israel anymore; he had no other option than to flee to his enemy, the Philistines. But even there, David always lived being on high alert. In Philistine, David lived in a remote city called Ziklag. He once went to the battlefield with the men, but when they returned, they found that the city had been burned to the ground and all the women and children taken captive. David and the people that were with him lifted up their voices and wept; the people were so sad, they wanted to stone David to death. Just like this, David couldn’t have a moment of free time because he had to constantly live under such urgent situations.

David Not Going Out to the Battlefield
After that, King Saul died on the battlefield and David became king. David defeated his enemies and gradually expanded his territory. When all of the enemies were destroyed by the power of God, David finally had some spare time in his life. He did not have to live with being worried or anxious anymore. However, when he had some time to spare, David began to act differently than before. In 2 Samuel chapter 11 in the Bible, a war broke out between Israel and Ammon. David sent Joab, his servants, and the entire army of Israel to the battlefield while he remained in the palace. He thought he didn’t need to go to a tough battlefield anymore. In 2 Samuel chapter 11 verse 2, David woke up in the evening. Why did he wake up in the evening instead of the morning? Maybe he had been drinking and partying the whole night before. But even though he slept through the day and woke up in the evening, as soon as he got up, he should have called his servants to get a report of the situation of the war and discuss strategy. However, he didn’t do that. He got up from the bed and walked upon the roof of the palace. When he looked down from the roof, he saw a woman washing herself. She was the wife of his servant, Uriah. David saw that she was very beautiful so he called her to lay with her. Afterwards, he sent her back and the woman became pregnant.

The Consequence of an Arrogant Heart
Until then, David always asked God regarding every situation. He should have asked God what to do with that matter, too. But this time he did not ask God, instead, he followed his thoughts and acted on his own. Thus, he caused Uriah to die on the battlefield in order to hide his sins. This incident brought unspeakable pain into David’s life. God rebuked David through the prophet Nathan. “Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? Thou hast killed Uriah and taken his wife to be thy wife. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house.” According to these words, David had to endure much suffering, such as when his son Absalom rebelled against him.

A Life Living for God
We are soldiers of Jesus Christ. We must live with all our heart because we are the soldiers fighting for the Gospel. However, we have many desires to live a simple, easygoing life. But we must remember, as we live life enjoying the luxury of free time, difficult and sad things will also happen. The disciples of Jesus lived through hardships, persecutions, and hunger. Precious servants of God such as Paul and Peter served God while living a life without luxury of time for themselves and faced constant difficulties. It may seem nice to have an easygoing life, but having that luxury corrupts people and leads their spiritual life to destruction. Even if it was difficult, people without spare time for themselves were the ones who did not become corrupted and lived a life for God for a long time. Now, we must all forsake wanting to enjoy free time and learn to be grateful to be able to live for God even when it is difficult.
