The Prophet Elisha and the Sons of the Prophets
선지자를 청한 생도들
열왕기하 6장에 엘리사 선지자와 생도들의 이야기가 나옵니다. 엘리사 선지자와 생도들이 지내는 곳에 사람들이 많아져서 예배장소가 좁았습니다. 하루는 생도들이 엘리사에게 말했습니다.
“선지자님, 우리가 당신과 함께 거하는 이곳이 이제 좁습니다. 그래서 저희가 요단으로 가서 나무를 해서 넓은 예배당을 만들려고 합니다.”
“가라.”
그중 한 생도가 말했습니다.
“선지자님도 저희와 함께 가시길 부탁드립니다.”
“그래, 내가 가리라.”
생도들이 예배당을 새로 지으려고 할 때, 엘리사 선지자에게 같이 가기를 부탁했습니다. ‘우리끼리 가서 해도 충분해’ ‘선지자님이 가 시면 잔소리만 하시지’ ‘엘리사 선 지자님이 가실 필요가 뭐가 있어?’ 라고 생각하지 않고 선지자님이 함께하기를 청했습니다. 생도들은 ‘우리가 아무리 나무를 잘 베도 하나님의 종이 같이 있는 것과 없는 것은 천지 차이야. 우리에게는 하나님의 종이 필요해’ 하는 마음을 가지고 있었습니다.
도끼를 빠뜨린 생도
엘리사 선지자와 생도들은 요단으로 가서 예배당을 지을 나무를 베었습니다. 그런데 한 생도가 나무를 베다가 도끼가 자루에서 빠져 강물에 떨어졌습니다. 생도는 놀라서 소리쳤습니다.
“아아, 선지자님! 어떡하면 좋아요? 빌려온 도끼를 물에 빠뜨렸습니다.”
엘리사가 물었습니다.
“어디에 빠졌느냐?”
“저기입니다.”
생도가 손으로 가리키자, 엘리사 선지자는 나뭇가지를 베어 물에 던졌습니다. 그러자 도끼가 물위로 떠올랐습니다. “가서 집어오너라.” 생도는 손을 내밀어 도끼를 잡았습니다
엘리사 선지자를 의지한 생도들
저는 예전에 장작을 때기 위해 도끼질을 종종 했습니다. 도끼는 쇠로 만들어져서 무겁기 때문에 자루에 서 잘 빠졌습니다. 그런데 자루에서 도끼가 빠지기 전에 헐거워지는 것이 느껴집니다. 그래서 ‘이번에 한 번 더 내리치면 도끼가 자루에서 빠지겠다’ 하는 것이 느껴져서 자루 에 도끼를 박고 다시 도끼질을 했습니다. 그런데 그 생도는 그걸 모르고 도끼를 빠뜨렸으니 일하는 것이 무척 서툴고 둔한 사람이었다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.
도끼를 물에 빠뜨렸을 때도 생도들은 “도끼가 강가에서 5미터 이상 날아가진 않았을 거야. 선지자님한테 얘기할 게 뭐 있어? 우리가 건지 면 되지.” “그래, 괜히 얘기해봐야 혼나기만 하지. 선지자님 몰래 얼 른 건지면 돼.”라고 하지 않고, 하나님의 종을 의지했습니다. 생도들 은 매사에 자기중심으로 살지 않고 자신들을 인도하는 하나님의 종을 필요로 하고 의지했습니다. 자신의 부족함을 알았기 때문입니다.
하나님과 엘리사를 무시한 왕
그 뒤에 열왕기하 6장을 보면, 이스라엘 왕이 아람 나라 때문에 어려움을 겪었습니다. 아람이 쳐들어와서 사마리아 성을 둘러싼 바람에 백성들이 농사를 짓지 못하고 굶어 죽어 갔습니다. 그런데 그런 상황에서도 이스라엘 왕은 하나님을 찾지 않았습니다. 엘리사 선지자가 전에 왕이 어려움을 당했을 때 여러 번 도와주 었지만 왕은 선지자를 의지하지 않았습니다.
왕이 조금만 생각할 줄 알면 “아, 전에도 나라가 어려울 때마다 엘리사 선지자가 도와주었지. 우리가 이렇게 어려운데 선지자는 뭘 하시냐? 여봐라, 엘리사 선지자를 얼른 모셔 와라. 하나님께 기도해 달라고 하자.”라고 했을 것입니다. 그런데 이스라엘 왕은 “엘리사의 머리가 오늘날 그 몸에 붙어 있으면 하나님이 내게 벌 위에 벌을 내 리실지로다.”라고 하며 선지자를 죽이려고 했습니다. 자신이 잘못하고 있는 줄을 모르는 것입니다. 자신이 잘하고 있다고 생각하면 마음이 높아져서 하나님과 상관없고 하나님의 종을 무시하는 삶으로 흘 러갑니다.
자신의 부족함을 알 때
우리는 ‘내가 전도를 잘해’ ‘내가공부를 잘해’ ‘내가 운동을 잘해’ 하는 마음을 가질 때가 있습니다. 우리가 무엇을 잘하는 것이 있다면 하나님께 은혜를 입은 것이기 때문에 하나님께 영광을 돌려야 합니다. 그런데 자신이 잘했다고 생각하는 순간, 마음이 교만해져서 다 른 사람들을 비방하고 하나님도 무시하게 됩니다. 그런 사람들은 하 나님이 기뻐하지 않으십니다. 우리 가 무엇을 잘할 때나 어려울 때나 겸비한 마음을 가져야 합니다. 엘리사 선지자의 생도들처럼 자신의 부족함을 알고 우리를 구원해주신 하나님께 감사하며 복음과 함께 기쁨을 나누는 사람이 되기를 바랍 니다.
The Sons of the Prophets Who Invited the Prophet
In 2 Kings chapter 6 in the Bible, there is the story of Elisha and the sons of the prophets. The place of worship, where the prophet Elisha and the sons stayed, was too crowded because many people were there. One day, the sons of the prophets said to Elisha.
“Prophet, the place where we dwell with you is too small for us. So let us go to Jordan, and take down wood to make a big chapel.”
“Go.”
One of them said: “We want to ask you to go with us.”
“Yes, I will go.”
When the sons of the prophets wanted to build a new chapel, they asked the prophet Elisha to go with them. They did not think, ‘We can go by ourselves’, ‘If the prophet comes with us, he will only nag at us’, ‘What is the need for prophet Elisha to go?’ Instead, they asked the prophet to go with them. The sons of the prophets had the heart, ‘No matter how well we cut trees, having the servant of God there makes a world of difference. We need God’s servant.’
The Son of the Prophets Who Dropped an Axe in Water
The prophet Elisha and the sons of the prophets went to Jordan to cut down trees to build a chapel. One of the sons was cutting a tree when the axe head fell out and into the river. He yelled out in surprise.
“Oh, prophet! What should I do? I dropped a borrowed axe in the water.”
Elisha asked.
“Where did it fall?”
“There.”
He showed him the place where it had fallen. Elisha cut down a stick and threw it in that place in the water and the axe rose to the surface. “Go and take it.” The son of the prophets reached out his hand and took the axe.
The Sons of the Prophets Relied on the Prophet Elisha
A long time ago I used an axe from time to time to cut firewood. An axe is made of iron and is heavy so it easily falls off of the handle. But before it falls off, you can feel the head coming loose. Because I could feel that if I used it one more time the head would fall off, I would secure it to the handle before using it to cut wood again. We can see that the son of the prophets was perhaps a clumsy and dull person because he did not know that and lost the axe in water.
However, even when they lost the axe in the water, they did not say to each other, “The axe could not have flown more than 5 meters in the water. Why tell the prophet about it? We can just go pick it up.”, “Yeah, telling the prophet will get us in trouble. We can quietly go and pick it up.” Instead, they relied on the servant of God. The sons of the prophets needed and relied on the servant of God to guide them in everything rather than living a selfcentered life. This is because they knew their shortcomings.
The King Who Despised God and Elisha
Also in 2 Kings chapter 6, the king of Israel suffered hardship because of Syria. The Syrians invaded and surrounded the city of Samaria, and the Israeli people were unable to farm and starved to death. However, even in such circumstances, the king of Israel did not seek God. The prophet Elisha had helped the king many times before whenever he was in trouble, but the king did not rely on him.
If the king thought just a little, he would say, “Oh, in the past, the prophet Elisha helped every time our country was in trouble. We’re in such great hardship now, where is he? Hurry and ask him to come at once. Let’s ask him to pray to God for us.” Instead, the king of Israel tried killing the prophet, saying, “God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha shall stand on him this day.” He did not know that he was doing wrong. When one thinks they are doing well, their heart becomes arrogant and they flow into a life that has nothing to do with God and despises God’s servants.
When You Realize Your Shortcomings
There are times when we have a heart thinking, ‘I’m good at preaching’, ‘I’m good at studying’, ‘I’m good at sports’. If there is anything we are good at, it is because we have received God’s grace so we should give glory to God. However, the moment you think you did well, the heart becomes arrogant, talks bad about others and even despises God. God is not pleased with such people. We must have a humble heart whether we are good at something or when we are having hard times. Like the sons of the prophets, I hope you will become a person who knows your shortcomings and gives thanks to God for saving you, and shares the joy of the gospel.
