Paul Saves People from a Tempest

People Who Got Caught in a Great Tempest
In Acts chapter 27 in the Bible, Paul was arrested for preaching the gos- pel and taken to Rome by ship. On the ship, there were a Roman cen- turion and some soldiers, a captain and sailors, and also other prisoners going to trial in front of the Roman emperor.
Paul saw that the weather was not good to sail in, so he spoke up.
“Sirs, I see that this voyage will be dangerous and damage not only goods and the ship, but also our lives. It would be better to stay here than to travel now.”
However, the captain and the sailors spoke differently.
“It is inconvenient to spend the winter here, it is advised that we go to Phenice now for the winter.”
The centurion, who commanded everything on the ship, trusted the captain more because Paul was the lowest-ranking prisoner on the ship. Just then, a gentle south wind blew, so the captain thought everything was in their favor and set sail.
But not long after, a tempestu- ous wind called Euroclydon arose on the island. The wind blew so strong that the ship became trapped and was being tossed around by it. The captain and sailors wrapped ropes around the ship and tried their best to hold on. But the storm grew stronger and stronger. The sailors were ordered to throw the cargo into the sea, and on the third day they had to toss out the ship’s equipment, too. So people were trapped in a great storm for many days, unable to see the sun or stars, and could not eat. Everyone lost all hope of being saved.

Be of Good Cheer!
Then Paul stood up and said:
“Sirs, you should have listened to me and not departed from Crete, then we could have avoided this harm and loss. But be of good cheer! There will be no loss of any man’s life among us.”
He continued to speak.
“The angel of God whom I serve spoke to me last night. ‘Paul, do not be afraid. You will go to Rome and stand before Caesar, and God has given you all those that sail with you’. I trust God that it will be just as He told me.”
Paul reassured the people that they would be arriving on the island soon, and asked them to eat. They had not eaten any food because they did not know when the storm would end, so they had just waited.
But when Paul brought bread, gave thanks and handed it out, everyone ate in peace. The next day, the ship reached an island and no one died.

Who Do You Look To?
There are many stories like this in the Bible. Peter was imprisoned, but God saved him. When Paul and Silas were imprisoned, they were able to come out safely by the power of God. These things depend on whether we look to God or Sa- tan when we face difficulties. There is always the work of Satan in our lives, but that’s why there is also the work of Jesus. The important thing is that the wisdom of Satan cannot reach the wisdom of Jesus, and the power of Satan cannot reach the power of Jesus.
However, Satan deceives us and tricks us into thinking that God won’t work for us and makes us fall into the problem and become dis- heartened. At such times, if we be- lieve in God’s Word, we can overcome Satan’s deception. No matter what difficulties we face, if we depend on Jesus, we can live a vic- torious life through Him. Through Jesus, we can bear fruit and live a glorious life.

Special People Living a Victorious Life
The ship going to Rome suffered from storms for 14 days. However, Paul, who trusted in God and be- lieved the Word of God, was there so everyone was saved. Paul was the lowest-ranked prisoner on the ship going to Rome. But God was with him, and he lived a life of saving and blessing all 276 people on board. Just the same, Christians can ap-pear to people to be low and useless. But those who believe in God are special people who can rescue and save others from their problems. If we look to God in difficult times, we can live a life where God pro- tects us and gives us victory.

May We Become Instruments of the Gospel Like Paul
I am a nobody, a person of low status. But at the age of 19, I was saved and became a child of God. Since then, God has been doing the work of preaching the gospel through me so that many people can be saved.
God is still working non-stop through His children. In 2022, by the grace of Jesus, I hope that all of us will be used and become people who bear the fruit of the gospel. I hope we become instruments of Jesus and be used to help people be saved.
