Governor Felix Meets Paul
복음을 전하다 잡힌 바울
사도행전 23장에 사도 바울이 예루살렘에서 유대인들에게 복음을 전했습니다. 그런데 말씀을 받아들이지 못하는 사람들 사이에 소동이 일어났습니다. 큰 분쟁이 생기고 바울을 죽이려는 사람들이 일어나자, 천부장이 바울의 안전을 위해 바울을 군대 안으로 데리고 갔습니다. 천부장이 바울을 데리고 가는 도중에, 바울의 조카가 바울을 죽이려고 하는 사람들이 있다는 정보를 알고 천부장에게 알렸습니다. 천부장은 백부장 둘을 불러서, 밤 9시에 보병 이백 명과 마병 칠십 명, 창군 이백 명을 준 비해 바울을 안전하게 가이사랴에 있는 벨릭스 총독에게 보냈습니다.
바울이 가이사랴로 간 후, 대제사장과 장로들이 벨릭스에게 바울을 고소해 바울이 그들 앞에서 예루살렘에서 있었던 일과 부활하신 예수님을 믿는 신앙에 대해 이야기했습니다.
로마 총독 벨릭스
벨릭스 총독은 그때부터 바울을 자기 지휘 아래 있게 하고 자주 만나 이야기를 나누었습니다. 벨릭스는 로마인이었지만 이스라엘의 총독으로 임명받으려고 이스라엘 여자와 결혼을 했습니다. 그래서 이스라엘 사람들의 신앙에 대해서 잘 알고 있었습니다. 사도행전 24장 22절에 보면, “벨릭스가 이 도에 관한 것을 더 자세히 아는 고로”라고 하였습니다. 벨릭스는 예수님에 관한 복음을 아주 잘 알고 있었던 것입니다.
며칠이 지난 뒤, 벨릭스가 바울을 불러 자기 아내인 드루실라와 함께 말씀을 들었습니다. 그때 바울은 의와 절제, 그리고 장차 올 심판에 대해 이야기했습니다. 벨릭스는 그 이야기를 듣고 굉장히 두려웠습니다. 그가 자신의 그런 마음을 바울에게 솔직하게 이야기하고 죄 사함을 받을 수 있도록, 하나님이 벨릭스에게 기회를 주신 것입니다. 그런데 벨릭스는 “지금은 돌아가라. 내가 틈이 있으면 너를 부르리라”고 하며 바울을 그냥 돌려보냈습니다.
하나님이 벨릭스에게 구원받을 기회를 주셨지만
벨릭스는 예수님을 믿는 교회에 대해 잘 알고 있었고, 유대 여자인 드루실라와 결혼했으며, 이스라엘의 총독으로 있었습니다. 그래서 하나님은 그에게 바울을 통해 구원받을 기회를 주셨습니다. 벨릭스는 구원받을 수 있는 조건을 다 갖춘 사람이었지만, 그의 관심은 돈에 있었습니다. 바울을 만날 때마다 복음을 듣거나 죄 사함을 받는 것에는 관심이 없고, 바울에게서 돈을 받을 수 있을지에 관심을 가졌습니다. 벨릭스는 이런 태도로 2년 동안 바울을 자기 손 아래 두고 있었습니다.
벨릭스가 바울을 데리고 있으면서 복음을 듣고 죄 사함을 받았으면 얼마나 좋았을까요? 벨릭스가 바울과 진지하게 대화했다면 아내와 함께 죄 사함을 받고 하나님으로 말미암아 복된 삶을 살 수 있었을 것입니다. 그리스도인이 되어 로마에서 많은 활동을 할 수 있었을 것입니다. 그런데 벨릭스는 자기 영혼에 대해서는 관심이 없고 돈에 관심이 컸습니다. 바울을 자주 불러서 이야기를 들었지만 마음이 돈에 빠져 있어서 결국 구원을 받지 못했습니다.
인생의 마지막에 구원받은 가나 대통령
몇 년 전, 내가 가나에 갔을 때 존 아타 밀스 대통령을 만났습니다. 대통령께서는 병이 위중해 죽음 앞에 서 있었습니다. 그분은 내 앞에서 자기 영혼의 문제에 대해 진지하 게 이야기했고, 그날 죄 사함을 받았습니다. 대통령께서 죄 사함을 받고 너무 기뻐했는데, 네 시간 뒤에 세상을 떠나셨다는 소식을 전해 들었습니다. 존 아타 밀스 대통령은 인생의 마지막에 한 시간을 하나님의 종과 같이 있으면서 복음을 듣고 죄 사함을 받았습니다.
우리가 신앙에 대해 전적으로 관심을 갖지 못하면, 아무리 많은 것을 알고 있어도 실질적으로 자신에게 유익을 주지 못합니다. 반대로 신앙에 마음을 쏟으면 얼마나 큰 복을 받는지 모릅니다. 존 아타 밀스 가나 대통령처럼 죽음 바로 앞에서 자신이 죄인인 것을 알고 예수 그리스도의 피로 죄 사함을 받는, 말로 표현할 수 없는 은혜를 누릴 수 있습니다.
하나님은 벨릭스뿐 아니라 우리 모두에게
지금도 많은 사람들이 하나님에 대해 알고 있지만 죄 사함을 받지 못하는 상태에 머물러 있습니다. 사람들이 성경에 관해서 많은 지식을 가지고 있지만 정작 믿음은 갖지 못한 경우가 많습니다. 예수님이 우리 죄를 씻기 위해 십자가에 못 박혀 피를 흘리셨다는 것을 아는데도, 그 피로 죄 사함을 받은 사람들은 많지 않습니다. 얼마나 많은 사람들이 예수님이 자기 죄를 위해 죽었다고 하면서도 죄를 사함 받지 못한 채 살고 있는지 모릅니다.
하나님은 벨릭스뿐 아니라 우리 모두에게 하나님 앞에 나와서 죄 사함을 받고 성령의 인도를 받으며 하나님과 동행하는 삶을 주기를 원하십니다. 우리가 하나님의 사람이 되어서 우리 속에 하나님의 마음이 흐르고 우리 안에서도 하나님 을 사랑하는 마음이 일어나면, 굉 장히 많은 열매를 맺을 수 있습니다. 누구든지 진지하게 성경을 대하며 말씀을 듣고, 예수님의 피로 죄를 사함 받는 것을 깨닫고 믿는다면, 그보다 큰 축복이 없을 줄 믿습니다.
Paul Caught While Preaching the Gospel
In Acts chapter 23 in the Bible, the apostle Paul preached the gospel to the Jews in Jerusalem. However, there was a commotion among those who could not accept the Word. When a great argument broke out and people wanted to kill Paul, the chief captain took him into the castle for his safety. While the chief captain was taking him, Paul’s nephew learned that there were people trying to kill Paul and informed the chief captain. The chief captain called two centurions to have them prepare two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen, and two hundred spearmen to safely bring Paul to Felix the governor in Caesarea at 9 p.m.
After Paul went to Caesarea, the high priest, along with the el- ders, testified to Governor Felix against Paul, telling him what had happened in Jerusalem and about Paul’s faith in the resurrected Jesus.
Felix the Roman Governor
From that point on, Governor Felix kept Paul under his control and met frequently to talk. Although Felix was Roman, he had married an Is- raeli woman so he could be appoint- ed the governor of Israel. Therefore, he knew the beliefs of the people of Israel well. In Acts chapter 24 verse 22, it says, “And when Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way”. Felix knew the gospel about Jesus very well.
A few days later, Felix and his wife, Drusilla, called Paul and listened to him. At that time, Paul talked of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come. Felix trem- bled when he heard the words. God had given Felix a chance so that he could honestly tell Paul his heart and receive the forgiveness of his sins. Instead, Felix said, “Go back now. I will call you when I have convenient time.” He just sent Paul away.
God Gave Felix a Chance to Be Saved
Felix knew about the church that believed in Jesus Christ very well because he had married a Jewish woman, Drusilla, and was the gov- ernor of Israel. Therefore, God gave him the opportunity to be saved through Paul. Felix had all the condi- tions to be saved, but his interest was in money. Every time he met Paul, he was not interested in hearing the gospel or receiving the forgiveness of sins, he was interested in whether he could get money from Paul. Felix kept Paul under his thumb for two years with this attitude.
How nice would it have been if Felix had heard the gospel and had his sins forgiven while he was with Paul? If Felix had had a seri- ous conversation with Paul, he and his wife would have been forgiven of their sins and could have lived a blessed life through God. He would have been able to do many activities in Rome by becoming a Christian. However, Felix was not interested in his own soul, rather, he was very interested in money. He often called Paul to hear him talk, but his heart was so engrossed in money that he was never saved.
Ghanaian President Saved at the End of His Life
A few years ago, when I was in Ghana, I met President John Atta Mills. The President was critically ill and on the verge of death. He spoke honestly about the problems of his soul to me, and that day he re- ceived the forgiveness of sins. The President was so happy to have re- ceived forgiveness for his sins, but four hours after our meeting, I was informed that he had passed away. President John Atta Mills spent an hour with a servant of God at the end of his life, hearing the gospel and receiving the forgiveness of sins.
No matter how much we know, unless we are fully concerned with our faith, it is of no practical ben- efit to ourselves. On the contrary, I can’t count how many blessings we will receive if we put our hearts into faith. We can receive indescrib- able grace like Ghana President John Atta Mills, realizing that he is a sinner right before his death and receiving the forgiveness of sins through the blood of Jesus Christ.
To All of Us, Not Just Felix
Even now, many people know about God, but they remain in the state of not being able to receive the forgiveness of sins. There are many cases where people have a lot of knowledge about the Bible but don’t actually have faith. Although people know that Jesus shed His blood on the cross to wash away our sins, there are not many people whose sins are forgiven through His blood. There are countless people who say that Jesus died for their sins, but still live without having their sins forgiven.
God wants all of us, not just Felix, to come before Him, receive the forgiveness of sins, be guided by the Holy Spirit, and live a life of walking with God. If we become His people, the heart of God flows within us, the heart of love for God arises within us, and we can bear a lot of fruit in life. There is no greater blessing than whoever takes the Bible seriously, listens to the Word, and realizes and believes that sins are forgiven through the blood of Jesus.
