The Battle Between Haman and Mordecai

Prime Minister Haman and Gatekeeper Mordecai
The book of Esther in the Old Testa- ment of the Bible records the story of the Israelites when they were taken captive to Persia, a great coun- try. Esther and Mordecai were cous- ins. Mordecai cared for and raised his cousin Esther, who had lost her parents. When King Ahasuerus was looking for a new queen, Esther was able to become queen under Mor- decai’s guidance. Mordecai was a gatekeeper at the gates of the palace.
There was a prime minister in Persia named Haman. King Ahasu- erus had given Haman the highest rank among his servants and he had commanded all his servants to bow to Haman. Haman was satisfied as if he had become king.

Haman’s Plan to Kill the Jews
One day, as Haman was leaving the palace gates, he saw Mordecai not bowing down.
“How dare a captive gatekeeper not bow unto me!? I will have him killed immediately.”
Haman wanted to kill Mordecai, but that
wouldn’t satisfy his anger. That’s when
he decided that kill- ing Mordecai alone
wouldn’t be enough and decided to kill all his people, the
Jews, too. So, he thought up a plan and went to the king.
“Your Majesty, there is a group of people scattered across your king- dom, who ignore your laws and go by their own laws. Such people should not be tolerated. We must destroy them. I will pay the king’s treasuries ten thousand talents of silver for this work.”
The king said, “Is that so? Then do what seems good to you, Ha- man.”
Haman had his scribes write a decree stating that in one day, on December 13th, all Jews were to be destroyed and everything they had would be taken as a reward. Then he wrote the king’s name, stamped it with the king’s ring, and sent it across the country. The decree, stamped with the king’s ring, could not be undone by anyone. After- wards, the king and Haman sat down to enjoy their drinks.

Esther Approaching the King
When Mordecai realized that his people were about to be destroyed, he prayed to God. He told Esther in the royal palace about the situation and sent her to ask the king to save her people. In that country, there was a law that if someone approached the king without being called, they had to be killed unless the king held out his golden scepter to them, but Esther decided to go to the king with the heart, “If I perish, I perish.”
After three days of fasting, Es- ther put on her queenly clothes and went into the king’s house. The king was startled and hurriedly held out the golden scepter to save his queen. Then he asked Esther.
“Queen Esther, what wilt thou? And what is thy request? It shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom.”
“If it seem good unto the king, let the king and Haman come this day unto the banquet that I have pre- pared for him.”
The king went to the banquet with Haman and asked again why the queen had risked her life and come to find him, but Esther only said, “If I have found favor in the sight of the king, let the king and Haman come to the banquet that I shall prepare for them, and I will do tomorrow as the king hath said.”
Haman was proud that he was the only one invited to the queen's banquet. But when he saw Mor- decai on his way out of the palace, he became furious again. When he returned home, he set up high gal- lows to hang Mordecai to death.

Haman’s Destruction
The next day, the king asked Esther again at the banquet.
“What is thy petition, queen Es- ther? And it shall be granted thee, even to the half of the kingdom.”
“If it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request: For we are sold, I and my people, to perish.”
“Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so?”
“It is this wicked Haman.”
The king was shocked. Haman was terrified and trembled for his life. In the end, Haman was hung on the gallows he had set up for Mordecai, and all his sons were killed.

God Helps Us
In the battle between Haman and Mordecai, no matter how we look at it, Mordecai was about to be destroyed. However, he prevailed. God knew Haman would plan to kill the Jews, so he made Esther the queen, and allowed Mordecai to save the king from the gatekeepers’ assassination plot. God made it pos- sible for Mordecai to win the battle against Haman.
We, too, face difficulties in life. At that time, most of us are scared and hesitant. But if we act boldly like Mordecai did, we will be able to see how God prepares everything in advance and helps us. There is no safer way than to believe in God. When we give up our ways and have faith in God, we can experi- ence Him living and working in us. Such experiences bring us closer to God and enable us to work as His precious servants.
