Four Lepers of the City of Samaria
굶주림에 지친 문둥병자들
열왕기하 7장을 보면, 사마리아 성이 아람군에게 포위를 당했습니다. 사마리아 성 안에 있던 양식이 떨어지자 사람들이 굶주려 죽어갔습니다. 어떤 여자들은 굶주림을 참다 못해 자기 아들을 잡아먹었습니다.
그때 성문 어귀에 문둥병자 네 사람이 살고 있었습니다. 그 사람들은 성에서 쫓겨나 성 밖에서 가족들이 내려주는 음식으로 겨우 살아갔습니다. 그런데 성 안에 기근이 드는 바람에 음식을 받을 수 없었습니다. 하루는 문둥병자들이 이야기를 했습니다.
“아이, 배고파.”
“우리가 뭐 하러 여기 앉아서 죽기를 기다리고 있지?”
“우리가 성에 들어간다고 해도 그곳도 굶주리고 있으니 어차피 죽을 거야. 그러니 우리가 가서 아람 군대에게 항복하자. 저희가 우리를 살려두면 살 것이고 죽이면 그냥 죽는 거야.”
지금까지 문둥병자들은 성에서 음식을 내려주기만을 기다리다가 죽을 수밖에 없습니다. 그런데 자신들의 생각 속에서 벗어나 새로운 생각을 했습니다. 문둥병자들에게 하나님의 지혜가 들어가서 그들을 이끌어 간 것입니다.
왕궁에 가서 고하자
문둥병자들은 일어나 아람 진으로 향했습니다. 아람 진에 이르러 보니 아무도 없었습니다. 하나님이 아람 군대에게 문둥병자들이 오는 소리를 병거와 말과 큰 군대가 쳐들어오는 소리로 듣게 하신 것입니다. 아람 군인들은 이스라엘 왕이 이웃 나라의 왕들에게 도움을 청해 자기들을 치러 오는 것이라 생각했습니다. 그리하여 장막과 말과 나귀와 음식과 은과 금을 그대로 두고 도망치기 바빴습니다.
문둥병자들은 장막에 들어가 먹고 마시고 은과 금과 의복을 취했습니다. 그러다가 이야기를 했습니다.
“우리의 소위가 선치 못하도다. 오늘날은 아름다운 소식이 있는 날이어늘 우리가 잠잠하고 있도다. 만일 밝은 아침까지 기다리면 벌이 우리에게 미칠지니 이제 떠나 왕궁에 가서 고하자.”
양식이 풍족해진 사마리아 성
문둥병자들은 얼른 일어나 성으로 갔습니다. 그리고 문지기를 불렀습니다.
“우리 이야기 좀 들어봐요.”
“뭐야? 저 문둥이들은?”
“아람 진에 갔더니 군인들은 아무도 없고 장막에 음식이 그대로 있었어요.”
소식을 전해들은 이스라엘 왕은 아람 군대가 술수를 썼다고 생각했습니다. 거짓 소문을 내고 숨어있다가 자신들이 가면 나타나 칠 것이라고 생각했습니다. 사람들도 처음에는 문둥병자들의 이야기를 믿지 못했습니다. 그러다 밤중에 아람 진으로 갔습니다. 그곳에는 문둥병자들의 말대로 양식이 아주 많았습니다. 여러 날을 굶던 사람들이 풍족한 양식을 먹으며 얼마나 행복했겠습니까. 또 문둥병자들에게 무척 고마웠을 것입니다.
하나님이 주신 새 마음
처음에는 문둥병자들이 아람 진에 있는 양식을 자기들만 먹고 은과 금도 감추려고 했습니다. 그런데 곧 새로운 마음이 생겼습니다. 양식이 풍족하다는 소식을 성에 알려서 사람들을 살리지 않으면 안 되겠다는 마음이 들었습니다. 하나님이 사마리아 성에 죽어 가는 사
람들을 구원하기 위해 문둥병자 네 사람을 사용하신 것이었습니다. 하나님은 먼저 문둥병자 네 사람에게 새로운 생각을 주셔서 아람 진으로 가게 하셨고, 그들을 먼저 배불리 먹여 주셨습니다. 그렇게 하나님이 어떻게 일하는지 보여주시고 그 사실을 사람들에게 외치게
하셨습니다.
1962년 10월 7일에 나는 전에 내가 갖지 못한 새로운 마음을 받았습니다. 그전까지 나는 도둑질하고 거짓말을 하니까 내가 죄인이라고 생각했습니다. 그런데 그날 성경을 읽다가 ‘내가 죄인인 건 맞아. 그런데 예수님이 십자가에 못박혀 죽으심으로 내가 받아야 할 모든 죄의 벌을 대신 받으셨어. 그러니 이제 내 죄가 씻어졌고 나는 의로워졌어’ 하는 마음이 들었습니다. 하나님이 나에게 복음을 깨닫게 해주신 것입니다.
그 뒤에 어려움이 있고 문제도 있었지만 나는 사람들에게 복음을 전했습니다. 내가 목회를 훌륭하게 할 능력이 있는 사람이 아니지만, 내가 복음을 전하는 동안에 하나님이 길을 열어주셔서 전 세계 사람들이 구원받게 해주셨습니다.
우리는 이 시대의 문둥병자들
우리도 이 시대의 문둥병자들입니다. 하나님은 우리도 하나님의 마음을 받아 복음 전하는 것을 기뻐 하십니다. 우리가 하나님의 음성을 무시하고 우리 생각에 젖어 복음 전하는 것을 부담스러워해서 그렇지, 하나님의 말씀을 따라 복음을 전하면 우리를 통해서도 사람
들이 구원받는 역사가 일어납니다. 그리고 하나님이 우리 삶을 천 가지 만 가지로 도우시는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 이제 여러분 모두 하나님의 말씀을 따라 주위 사람들에게 복음을 전해서 하나님의 역사를 많이 경험하는 한 해가 되기를 바랍니다.
Starving Lepers
In 2 Kings chapter 7 in the Bible, the city of Samaria was besieged by the Syrians. When the food in the city ran out, people began to die of starvation. Some women
could not bear the hunger and ate their own sons.
At that time, there were four lepers living by the entrance of the city gate. They were driven out of the city and lived outside, surviving on food provided by their families. However, due to a famine in the city, they could not receive food anymore. One day the lepers were speaking to each other.
“Huff, I’m hungry.”
“Why are we just sitting here waiting to die?”
“Even if we go into the city, we will die anyway because of the famine there. So, let’s go and surrender to the Syrian army. If they let us live, we shall live, and if they kill us, we shall just die.”
Until now, the lepers had no choice but to die while waiting for food from the city that would never come. However, they got free of their thoughts and came up with a new thought. God’s wisdom had entered the lepers’ hearts and led them.
Let’s Go and Tell the King’s Household
The lepers got up and went to the camp of the Syrians. When they arrived, the camp was empty. God had caused the Syrian army to believe that the noise the lepers made as they approached sounded like chariots and horses and a great army coming to attack. The Syrian soldiers thought that the king of Israel had asked for help from the
kings of neighboring countries to come fight against them. So, they fled, abandoning their tents, horses, donkeys, food, silver, and gold.
The lepers went into the tents and ate and drank. They also took the silver, the gold and some clothing. But then they said to each other, “We do not well: this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace: if we tarry till the morning light, some
mischief will come upon us: now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king’s household.”
Food Became Abundant in Samaria
The lepers rushed back to the city and called out to the gatekeepers.
“Listen to us.”
“What do these lepers want?”
“When we went to the camp of the Syrians, there were no soldiers and there was plenty of food in the tents.”
Upon hearing the news, the king of Israel thought that the Syrians were setting a trap. He thought they had made false rumors and hidden somewhere so they could attack
when the people came out of the city. No one believed the story of the lepers at first. So, they went to the camp of the Syrians at night, and just as the lepers had said, they found so much food there. How happy the people who had been starving for days must have been while eating lots of food. They must also have been very grateful to the lepers.
A New Heart from God
At first, the lepers ate the food in the Syrian camp and tried to hide the silver and gold to keep only for themselves. But soon they had a new heart. They felt that they had to
inform the city about the abundance of food so people could be saved. God had used the four lepers to save the dying people in the city of Samaria. First, God gave the four lepers a new thought, led them to the Syrian camp, and fed them until
they were full before anyone else. God showed how He works then led
them to preach the fact to people.
On October 7, 1962, I received a new heart that I had never had before. Until then, I thought I was a sinner because I had stolen and lied. However, while reading the Bible
that day, I had the heart thinking, ‘It is true that I am a sinner. However, Jesus died on the cross and received all the punishment for my sins. So now my sins have been washed away and I have become righteous.’ God allowed me to realize the Gospel.
After that, there were difficulties and problems, but I preached the Gospel to people. I am not qualified to do a great ministry, but while I was preaching the Gospel, God opened the way for people all over the world to be saved.
We Are the Lepers of This Age
We, too, are the lepers of this age. God rejoices that we also receive His heart and preach the Gospel. When we ignore God’s voice and become immersed in our own
thoughts, we feel burdened to preach the Gospel. However, if we preach the Gospel according to God’s word, the work of people being saved will also happen through us. Plus, we can see God helping our lives in a thousand ways. I hope this year will be one in which everyone will follow the Word of God and preach the Gospel to the people around them, experiencing much of God’s work.
