Uzzah and Obed-Edom
법궤를 붙잡은 웃사
사무엘하 6장에 웃사와 오벧에돔의 이야기가 나옵니다. 이스라엘이 블레셋과 전쟁을 할 때 하나님의 법궤를 빼앗긴 적이 있었습니다. 그런데 블레셋이 하나님의 법궤를 보고 두려워하여 돌려보냈습니다. 법궤는 산에 사는 아비나답의 집에 오랜 세월 있게 되었습니다. 그러다 다윗이 왕이 되자 다윗은 법궤를 다윗 성으로 모셔 오기로 했습니다. 백성들은 새 수레를 만들어 소가 끌게 해서 법궤를 옮기기 시작했습니다. 아비나답의 아들 웃사와 아효가 열심히 준비하고 수레를 몰았습니다. 아효는 궤 앞에서 수레를 이끌고 다윗과 백성들은 수금과 비파 등 악기를 연주하며 하나님의 법궤를 옮겨오는 것을 기뻐했습니다.
그런데 수레가 나곤의 타작마당에 이르렀을 때 갑자기 소들이 뛰었습니다. 그때 웃사가 법궤를 얼른 붙들었습니다. 하나님은 그것을 보시고 진노하셔서 웃사를 치셨습니다. 웃사가 그 자리에서 죽고 말았습니다. 웃사는 무엇을 잘못한 것일까요?
웃사의 잘못
성경에 보면 하나님의 법궤는 제사장이 메고 옮기도록 정해져 있었습니다. 그런데 백성들은 하나님의 말씀을 잊고 자기들의 생각을 따라 새 수레를 만들었습니다.
그리고 웃사와 아효는 자기들이 하나님의 법궤를 옮기는 중요한 일을 하고 사람들이 노래하고 춤을 추며 기뻐하는 것을 보고 마음이 들떴던 것 같습니다. 그래서 소의 고삐를 대충 잡고 있었습니다. 소의 고삐를 바짝 단단히 잡고 있었다면 혹시 소들이 놀라서 뛰더라도 얼른 해결할 수 있었을 것입니다. 그런데 고삐를 대충 잡고 있다가 법궤가 떨어질 것 같자, 자기가 얼른 법궤를 붙잡았습니다. 자신이 하나님의 궤를 위하고 하나님의 궤를 지키려고 한 것입니다. 그것은 “아이고, 웃사가 아니었으면 법궤가 부서질 뻔했다. 웃사가 법궤를 지켰다”고 하는 상황을 만든 것이었습니다.
법궤는 하나님을 의미합니다. 하나님은 스스로 계신 분으로, 사람의 도움을 받는 분이 아닙니다. 사람이 하나님을 붙들고 위한다는 것은 말도 안 되는 이야기입니다.
웃사와 오벧에돔의 차이
다윗은 웃사가 죽는 것을 보자 두려웠습니다. 그래서 법궤를 다윗성으로 모셔가지 않고 가드 사람 오벧에돔의 집으로 메고 가게 했습니다. 그리하여 하나님의 법궤가 오벧에돔의 집에 석 달을 있었는데 하나님께서 온 집에 복을 주셨습니다. 성경에는 오벧에돔이 법궤를 위해 무엇을 했다는 기록이 없습니다. 그냥 법궤를 받아들여 모시고 있었을 뿐이었습니다. 그런데 오벧에돔의 온 집이 복을 받았습니다. 웃사 가족은 하나님의 법궤를 모시고 있으면서도 법궤에 대해 몰랐습니다. 하나님의 뜻에 관심이 없었던 것입니다. 그러니까 메고 옮기지 않고 수레에 싣고 끌고 갔고 법궤가 흔들리자 자기가 붙잡은 것입니다.
우리는 이 시대의 오벧에돔
우리도 이 시대의 오벧에돔과 같은 사람들입니다. 하나님을 마음에 모시고 우리를 위해 일하고자 하시는 하나님의 뜻을 알 때 하나님이 우리를 위해 일하시는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 오벧에돔이 무엇을 잘하고 법궤를 잘 섬겨서 복을 받은 것이 아닌 것처럼, 우리가 하나님을 위해 뭘 해야 하는 것이 아니라 우리를 위해서 일하기 원하시는 하나님을 믿기만 하면 됩니다.
나는 복음을 전하며 사는 동안 어려운 일을 많이 만났습니다. 그런데 그때마다 하나님이 나를 돕고 복을 주시고 은혜 베푸시는 것을 봤습니다. 한 번도 내가 혼자 당한 적이 없었고, 하나님이 나와 함께 계셔서 나를 이끌고 인도해 주셨습니다. 하나님이 나와 함께 계시니까 못나고 부족해도 문제가 안 되고 실수하고 잘못을 해도 문제가 안 되었습니다. 이것이 바로 하나님의 은혜라는 것입니다.
하나님이 우리를 붙들고 지키실 때
우리가 오늘 하루 음식을 먹고 공부를 하고 건강하게 지내는 모든 것이 하나님의 은혜입니다. 사람은 누구나 내일 무슨 일을 당할지 모릅니다. 그래서 우리가 우리 자신을 지킨다는 것은 잘못된 것이고, 우리가 하나님을 위한다는 것은 더욱 말도 안
되는 이야기입니다. 인간은 하나님을 위할 수 없습니다. 하나님이 우리 인간들을 위해 계신 분입니다. 나라는 존재가 어떨 때 가장 안전한지, 어떨 때 가장 복된지, 어떨때 가장 영광스러운지 정확히 알아야 합니다. 우리가 노력하면 좀 더 잘살고 좀 더 공부 잘하고 좀 더 여유롭게 살 수 있을지 모릅니다. 그런데 우리가 우리 인생을 위해 애쓰는 것보다 하나님이 우리를 위해 일하시는 것이 훨씬 더 안전합니다. 우리가 예수님 안에 있을 때, 하나님의 은혜 안에 있을 때, 하나님이 우리를 붙들고 지키실 때 가장 안전하고 감당할 수 없는 복을 누릴 수 있습니다. 여러분이 그런 마음을 가지고 집에서나 학교에서 생활할 때 하나님이 여러분을 돕고 이끌고 지키시는 것을 볼 수 있습니다.
웃사는 자기가 하나님을 붙들려고 하다 죽임을 당했습니다. 오벧에돔은 하나님을 모시고 있는 것만으로 복을 받았습니다. 우리도 ‘하나님, 저는 예수님의 보혈로 죄 사함을 받았고 거듭나서 하나님이 내 안에 계십니다. 하나님만큼 나를 잘 지킬 분이 없으니까 하나님께 맡기고 살겠습니다’ 하는 마음을 가질 때 가장 행복한 사람이 될 것입니다.
Uzzah Took Hold of the Ark of God
2 Samuel chapter 6 in the Bible tells the story of Uzzah and Obed-Edom. When Israel was at war
with the Philistines, the ark of God was captured. However, when the Philistines saw the ark of God, they were afraid and sent it back, and it stayed in the house of Abinadab,
who lived in the mountains, for many years. Then, when David became king, he decided to bring the ark of God to the city of David. People began to make a new cart for the ark of God and have oxen
pull it. Uzzah and Ahio, two sons of Abinadab, had prepared diligently and drove the cart. Ahio
led the cart in front of the ark, and David and the house of Israel rejoiced in bringing back the ark of God and played before the LORD on all manner of instruments such as harps and psalteries.
As the cart reached Nagon’s threshingfloor, the oxen suddenly jumped and shook the cart. Uzzah quickly took hold of the ark of God. Upon seeing this, God was so angry that He struck Uzzah. He died on the spot. What did Uzzah do wrong?
The Fault of Uzzah
According to the Bible, the ark of God was designated to be carried and moved only by the priest. But the people forgot the Word of God and made a new cart following their own thoughts.
And it seems that Uzzah and Ahio were excited to be doing the important work of moving the
ark of God and seeing the people singing, dancing, and rejoicing. So, they might have held the reins of the oxen loosely. If they had held them tightly and securely, they might have been able to quickly settle the oxen when they jumped. But because they might have held the reins loosely and saw that the ark was about to fall, Uzzah quickly took hold of it. He was trying to be the protector for the ark of God and save it. That was creating a situation for people to think, “Oh dear, if it wasn’t for Uzzah, the ark of God would have been destroyed. Uzzah saved it.” The ark represents God; He is self-existent and does not depend on human help. It is absurd to say that humans can take hold of God and help Him.
The Difference Between Uzzah and Obed-Edom
David was afraid when he saw Uzzah die. He had the ark of God carried to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite, instead of taking it into the city of David. Hence, the ark of God stayed in the
house of Obed-Edom for three months, and God blessed all his household. There is no record in the Bible of what Obed-Edom had done for the ark. He only accepted and served the ark in his house, and all his household had been blessed. On the other hand, Uzzah’s household also served the ark of God, but they had no idea about how to handle it. They were not interested in God’s will. That is why they put the ark on a cart and had oxen pull it rather than carrying it, and when the ark shook, Uzzah took hold of it.
We Are Obed-Edom of This Age
We are also people like Obed-Edom of this age. We can see God working for us when we accept Him into our hearts and know His will to work for us. Just as Obed-Edom was not blessed by doing something well, or serving the ark of God well, we do not have to do anything for God except to only believe in Him who wishes to work for us.
I encountered many difficult situations in my life as I evangelized. But I saw God helping me, blessing me, and bestowing grace upon me every time. I have never been alone in difficulties. God was always with me, leading and guiding me. It does not matter if I am inferior or inadequate, or if I make mistakes or do wrong because God is with me. That is God’s grace.
When God Holds Us and Protects Us
Eating, studying, and staying healthy; all that we do today is God’s grace. No one knows what
will happen tomorrow. Therefore, it is wrong to say that we protect ourselves, and it is even more
ridiculous to say that we are for God. Humans cannot be for God; He is the one who exists for us.
We must know exactly when our lives are the safest, when we are the most blessed, and when we are the most glorious. We might be able to live a little better, study a little better, and enjoy a little more leisure if we work hard. But it is much safer for God to work for us than for us to struggle for our lives. We can only enjoy the safest and most priceless blessing when we are in Jesus, when we are in God’s
grace, and when God holds us and protects us. Whether at home or at school, you can see that God helps you, guides you, and protects you when you live with such a heart.
Uzzah was killed when he tried to ‘protect’ God. Obed-Edom was blessed just by attending to God. We will also become the happiest people when we have the heart, ‘God, you dwell within me because I was born again by receiving the forgiveness of sins through the blood of Jesus. I entrust my life to you because there is no one who will protect me as well as you, Lord.’
