David’s Way, Saul’s Way
아말렉을 진멸하라
사울은 하나님의 은혜로 이스라엘 왕이 되었습니다. 이스라엘 나라의 역사적인 초대 왕이 된 것입니다. 사울이 왕이 되고 얼마 안 되었을 때, 하나님이 사무엘 선지자를 통해 사울에게 말씀하셨습니다.
“하나님께서 왕에게 말씀하시기를 ‘지금 아말렉 나라에 쳐들어가서 그들의 모든 소유를 남기지 말고 진멸하라. 남녀와 소아와 젖 먹는 아이와 우양과 약대와 나귀를 죽이라’ 하셨습니다.”
사울은 20만 명이 넘는 군인들을 모아 아말렉을 쳐들어갔습니다. 아말렉 왕 아각을 사로잡고 백성들을 죽였습니다. 그런데 아각 왕을 살려두었고, 양과 소 중에 기름지고 좋은 것은 남겨두었습니다. 그것을 보시고 하나님이 사무엘 선지자에게 말씀하셨습니다.
“내가 사울을 왕 삼은 것을 후회하노라. 그가 나를 좇지 아니하며 내 명령을 이루지 아니하였기 때문이다.”
자기 생각을 따른 사울 왕
우리가 하나님을 믿는 신앙을 하는 데에 있어서 가장 중요한 것은 자신의 생각을 버리는 것입니다. 하나님께서 이사야 55장에서 “내 생각은 너희 생각과 다르며 내 길은 너희 길과 달라서, 하늘이 땅보다 높음같이 내 길은 너희 길보다 높으며 내 생각은 너희 생각보다 높으니라”고 하셨습니다. 하나님의 생각은 우리 생각과 전혀 다르기 때문에, 우리가 하나님을 믿으려면 우리 생각을 버리고 하나님의 뜻을 따라야 합니다.
그런데 사울은 그렇지 못했습니다. 하나님이 아말렉의 모든 것을 진멸하라고 하셨지만, 사울은 자기가 보기에 좋은 것을 남겨놓았습니다. 하나님의 뜻을 버리고 자기 생각을 따른 것입니다.
하나님을 바라본 다윗
한번은 블레셋 거인 골리앗이 전쟁터에 나타났습니다. 골리앗의 키는 6규빗 한 뼘으로, 약 3미터나 되었습니다. 사울과 이스라엘 사람들은 모두 골리앗을 보고 두려워서 정신을 잃었습니다. 그러나 다윗은 용감하게 골리앗 앞에 나아갔습니다. 다윗은 어려서 양을 칠 때부터 하나님을 의지하고 하나님을 힘입어서 어려움을 이길 수 있었습니다. 블레셋 장수 골리앗이 아무리 키가 크고 힘이 세지만 하나님을 이기지는 못한다는 것을 믿었습니다. 사람들은 눈에 보이는 골리앗을 두려워했지만, 다윗은 골리앗만 본 것이 아니라 하나님을 바라보고 골리앗을 칠 수 있었습니다.
자기 생각을 따라간 결과
결국 하나님은 사울 왕을 폐하시고 다윗을 새 왕으로 세우실 것을 말씀하셨습니다. 사울은 그러한 하나님의 뜻을 알면서도 다윗을 죽이고 자기가 계속해서 왕위를 지키려고 했습니다. 다윗은 사울을 피해 이스라엘을 떠나 블레셋 땅으로 도망을 갔습니다. 거기에서 문제가 생겼습니다.
그전부터 블레셋 군인들이 여러 번 이스라엘을 쳐들어왔습니다. 그럴 때마다 하나님의 사람 다윗이 있어서 블레셋이 패배하고 돌아갔습니다. 그런데 다윗이 이스라엘을 떠나자마자 블레셋이 군대를 모집해서 이스라엘을 쳐들어왔습니다. 이스라엘은 블레셋 군대를 막지 못했습니다. 사울과 사울의 세 아들 요나단, 아비나답, 말기수아가 죽임을 당하고 말았습니다.
사울이 왜 죽었습니까? 아무리 블레셋이 쳐들어와도 다윗이 있으면 절대로 이스라엘을 이기지 못합니다. 그런데 사울 자신 때문에 다윗이 이스라엘을 떠났고, 그로 인해 전쟁에서 패해 죽임을 당한 것입니다. 사울이 하나님의 뜻을 버리고 자기 생각을 따라간 결과였습니다.
하나님과 마음을 같이하는 사람
나는 1962년에 하나님의 은혜로 죄 사함을 받았습니다. 그리고 성경을 읽으면서 내 생각이 하나님의 생각과 다른 것을 알았습니다. 그래서 내가 하나님과 같은 마음을 갖기 위해서 내 생각을 버려야 했습니다. 나는 부족한 사람이지만, 내 생각을 버리고 하나님의 뜻을 따라 나아갔을 때 하나님이 은혜를 베푸시는 것을 알 수 있었습니다.
우리가 무엇을 잘하거나 성공하려면 열심히 애써야 하는 것이 아닙니다. 먼저 성경을 읽으면서 하나님의 뜻을 찾아야 합니다. 그리고 자신의 생각을 버리고 하나님의 뜻을 따라 살면 무엇을 하든지 잘되고 은혜를 입습니다. 자신의 생각이 아닌 하나님의 뜻을 알아서 하나님과 마음을 같이하는 사람. 그 사람이 무슨 일을 해도 성공하고 복을 받습니다. 그런 사람을 우리는 하나님의 사람이라고 말합니다. 그런데 어떤 사람들은 하나님의 뜻을 자세히 모르고 자기 생각을 따라가다가 잘못되는 경우가 많습니다.
우리도 다윗처럼
다윗은 자기 생각이 아닌 하나님의 뜻을 따라 일생을 살았습니다. 반대로 사울은 하나님의 뜻보다 자기 생각을 따라서 살았습니다. 우리가 사울처럼 하지 말고 다윗처럼 자신의 생각을 버리고 하나님의 말씀과 마음을 같이하면 밝고 복된 삶을 살 수 있습니다.
Destroy Amalek
Saul became the king of Israel by the grace of God. He became the first king in the history of Israel. Shortly after Saul became king, God spoke to him through the prophet Samuel.
“God said to the king, ‘Go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass’.”
Saul gathered over two hundred thousand soldiers and attacked Amalek. He captured Agag, the king of the Amalekites, and killed all the people. However, he spared Agag, along with the best of the sheep, the oxen, and all that was good, and did not completely destroy them. Seeing that, God spoke to the prophet Samuel.
“It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments.”
King Saul Followed His Own Thoughts
The most important way for us to have faith in God is to abandon our own thoughts. God said in Isaiah chapter 55 in the Bible, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Since God’s thoughts are completely different from ours, if we want to believe in God, we must abandon our thoughts and follow God’s will.
Saul did not do that. God commanded him to destroy all of Amalek, but Saul saved what seemed good to him. He abandoned God’s will and followed his own thoughts.
David Looked Up to God
One day, the Philistine giant, Goliath, showed up at the battlefield. Goliath’s height was six cubits and a span, which was about 3 meters. When Saul and all Israel saw him, they were terrified. But David bravely marched towards Goliath. From a young age, David had relied on God and he overcame difficulties by the strength of God when he was keeping his father’s sheep. He believed that no matter how tall and strong Goliath was, he could not defeat God. People were afraid of the giant they saw, but David did not look only at Goliath, he looked up to God and that is how he was able to strike Goliath down.
The Consequences of Following Your Own Thoughts
Eventually, God said He would abolish King Saul and anoint David as the new king. Despite knowing God’s will, Saul continued to try to kill David to keep the throne. David left Israel to escape Saul and fled to the land of the Philistines. That’s when problems arose.
Before, the Philistine soldiers had attacked Israel several times. But every time, David, the man of God, had been there to defeat and chase them away. However, as soon as David left Israel, the Philistines recruited an army and attacked Israel. Israel was not able to defeat the Philistine army. Saul and his three sons, Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, were all killed. Why did Saul die? If David had been present, no matter how many times the Philistines invaded, they could never have defeated Israel. But David was forced to flee out of Israel because of Saul, and as a result, Israel lost the war and Saul was killed in battle. That was the consequence of Saul abandoning God’s will and following his own thoughts.
One Whose Heart is Like-minded to God
In 1962, by the grace of God, I was forgiven of my sins. As I read the Bible, I realized that my thoughts are different from God’s thoughts. Therefore, in order for me to be like-minded to God, I had to throw away my thoughts. Although I am a lacking person, I was able to know that God blessed me when I abandoned my thoughts and followed His will.
It's not that we have to be good at something or work hard to be successful. First, you must read the Bible and find out what the will of God is. Then, when you abandon your own thoughts and live according to God’s will, whatever you do will work out and you will receive grace. A person who rejects his own thoughts, understands God’s will and has the same heart as God, will succeed and be blessed with whatever he does. We call such a person a man of God. However, some people, not knowing exactly what the will of God is, follow their own thoughts and often go wrong.
Like David
David lived his life according to God’s will, not his own thoughts. On the contrary, Saul lived according to his own thoughts rather than the will of God. If we do like David, and not Saul, by throwing away our thoughts and putting our hearts to the Word of God, we, too, can live a bright and blessed life.
