The Captive Little Girl Found Hope
포로로 잡혀간 소녀
아주 오래 전, 이스라엘에 전쟁이 일어났습니다. 시리아에서 쳐들어온 것입니다. 시리아는 큰 군대를
이끌고 와서 이스라엘을 치고 백성들을 잡아갔습니다. 그때 한 소녀도 시리아로 끌려갔습니다. 그 소
녀는 시리아의 군대장관인 나아만의 아내의 몸종이 되었습니다.
소녀는 아침부터 온 집안을 청소하고 빨래를 하고 음식을 하는 등 고된 삶을 살았습니다. 밤이면 자
신의 작은 방에 들어가 눈물을 흘렸습니다.
“내가 왜 여기서 힘들게 살아야 하지? 엄마, 아빠 보고 싶다. 언제까지 이렇게 살아야 해?”
힘들 때마다 하나님을 향해 원망이 나왔습니다.
“하나님, 나를 왜 포로로 잡혀오게 하셨어요? 왜 나를 안 지켜주셨어요?”
소녀의 새 마음
그러던 어느 날, 소녀는 나아만 장군이 문둥병에 걸린 것을 알았습니다. 처음에는 ‘주인님이 문둥병자
였다니. 나도 문둥병에 걸릴지 몰라’ 하고 두려웠습니다. 그러다가 ‘아무리 문둥병을 고칠 수 없다고
하지만, 사마리아에 있는 엘리사 선지자님을 만나면 병을 고칠 수 있는데…’ 하는 생각이 들었습니다.
나아만 장군이 엘리사 선지자님을 모르는 것이 안타까웠습니다. 그러자 ‘내가 주인님께 선지자님 얘기를 해드려야겠다. 장군님의 문둥병이 나으면 얼마나 기뻐하실까? 아, 하나님이 이래서 나를 이곳에 잡혀오게 하셨구나!’ 하는 마음이 들었습니다.
소녀는 그때까지 하나님이 왜 자신을 잡혀오게 놔두셨는지 이해할 수 없어서 하나님을 원망했습니다.
언제까지 부모와 떨어져서 종살이를 해야 하는지 걱정했습니다. 그런데 이제 마음이 바뀌었습니다.
소녀를 통해 일하신 하나님
형편은 달라진 것이 없었지만 소녀는 그곳에서 지내는 것이 기쁘고 소망스러웠습니다. 나아만의 아내가 소녀의 달라진 모습을 보고 물었습니다.
“너 요새 좋은 일이 있니? 요즘 네가 웃으며 지내네.”
“예, 주인님. 안 그래도 말씀드릴 것이 있어요. 장군님이 문둥병을 앓고 계시잖아요.”
“너! 그걸 어떻게 알았어? 함부로 떠들었다가는 어떻게 되는지 알지?”
“걱정마세요. 그런데요 주인님, 제가 문둥병을 고칠 길을 알아요.”
“뭐라고? 유명한 의사들도 문둥병을 못 고친다고 하는데 어떻게 고친다는 거야?”
“우리나라 사마리아에 가면 엘리사 선지자님이 계세요. 선지자님은 하나님의 사람이에요. 그래서 무슨 병이든 고치실 수 있어요.”
“그게 사실이야?”
“네, 선지자님은 분명히 문둥병을 고쳐요. 그걸 알려드리고 싶었어요. 제가 그동안 여기에 잡혀 온
이유를 몰라 괴로웠는데 이제야 알았어요. 하나님이 장군님의 병을 고쳐주시려고 저를 이곳으로 보내신 거예요.”
나아만의 아내는 소녀가 진지하게 이야기하는 것을 들으며 ‘내 남편이 그곳에 가서 문둥병을 고칠 수 있을지도 모르겠다’ 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 곧이어 자신의 남편에게 그 이야기를 전했고, 나아만은 엘리사 선지자를 찾아가 문둥병이 나아서 돌아왔습니다. 소녀 덕분에 나아만의 집에 평화와 행복이 찾아온 것입니다.
다시 떠오를 해를 생각하면
남태평양에 있는 키리바시라는 나라에 이런 이야기가 있습니다. 저녁에 해가 질 때 아이들이 울면서 말합니다.
“엄마, 해가 바다에 빠졌어. 이제 캄캄해질 텐데 어떻게 하지?”
그러면 엄마들이 이렇게 이야기해준다고 합니다.
“괜찮아. 바다 속에 난쟁이들이 사는데, 그 난쟁이들이 밤새도록 해를 새로 만든단다. 지금도 난쟁
이들이 해를 만들고 있어. 아침이 되면 그 해를 바다 위로 밀어 올릴 거야. 그러면 바다 위로 해가 올라 와서 세상을 다시 밝게 비쳐줘. 그러니 해가 진다고 슬퍼하지 마.”
난쟁이들이 해를 만들어 바다 위로 밀어 올리는 것은 아니지만, 아침이면 해가 다시 떠오릅니다. 해
가 바다로 진다고 해서 없어지는 것이 아닙니다. 그런데 지금 컴컴하다고 해서 슬퍼하는 사람은 불행하게 살 수밖에 없습니다. 반대로, 내일 아침에 해가 뜰 것을 기다리는 사람은 희망을 가지고 행복을 누립니다.
어려움은 하나님이 주신 연습문제
때로는 우리 힘으로 감당할 수 없는 어려움을 만날 때가 있습니다. 그것은 하나님이 우리에게 “이럴 때 나를 의지해 봐” 하고 주신 연습문제입니다. 그래서 어려울 때 하나님이 도우실 것을 믿고 바라봐야 합니다. “하나님, 제게 이런 어려움이 있습니다. 이 어려움을 해결해주세요” 하고 기도해보세요. 그러면 ‘아, 그때는 몰랐는데 하나님이 나를 이렇게 도와주셨네’ ‘지나고 보니까 내가 이렇게 큰 복을 받았네’ 하는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 포로 소녀가 하나님의 마음을 알고 행복해진 것처럼, 우리 삶도 행복해지고 소망스러워질 것입니다.
A Little Girl Taken Captive
A long time ago, the Syrians invaded Israel and war broke out. They came with a large army
and captured many people and took them away. Also, among the captives, there was a little girl
who became a servant to the wife of Naaman, a commander in the Syrian army.
The little girl lived a very difficult life. She had to wake up early in the morning to clean the
house, do laundry and prepare the food for cooking. At night, she would go into her small room and cry.
“Why do I have to live such a hard life here? I miss my mom and dad. When will this life end?”
Every time when things became difficult, she resented God.
“God, why did you let me be captured? Why didn’t you protect me?”
A New Heart
Then one day, the little girl found out that General Naaman had leprosy. Her first thoughts
were full of fear. ‘I can’t believe the master is a leper. What if I get leprosy, too?’ But then her next thoughts were, ‘People say leprosy is impossible to cure, but if the master meets the
prophet Elisha in Samaria, I’m sure his leprosy can be cured...’ She felt sorry that Naaman did not know about the prophet Elisha. Then she had a heart, ‘I should tell him about the prophet. How happy would he be if his leprosy could be cured? Oh, this must be why God brought me to this place!’
Until then, the little girl had resented God because she could not understand why He had left her to be a captive. She only worried and wondered how long she would have to live a life of slavery away from her parents. But she had a change of heart.
God Works Through the Little Girl
The little girl began to feel happy and hopeful staying at Naaman’s house even though her
circumstances had not changed. Naaman’s wife saw the change on her face and asked.
“You look like you’re in a good mood. I see you smiling these days.”
“Yes, Ma’am. I have something I would like to tell you. I noticed that the general is suffering from leprosy.”
“You... How did you know? You know what will happen if you open your mouth about this, don’t
you?”
“Yes, Ma’am. But, I wanted to tell you that I know a way to cure leprosy.”
“What? Even the best doctors all say it is incurable, how do you know a way to cure it?”
“In my country, Samaria, there is the prophet Elisha. He is a man of God and he can cure any type of disease.”
“Is that true?”
“Yes, the prophet can certainly heal leprosy. That is what I wanted to tell you. I was in great distress not knowing why I had to be in captivity all this time, but now I know why; God sent me here so He could cure the general’s disease.”
Listening to the little girl talking so seriously, Naaman’s wife thought, ‘My husband might really
be able to get his leprosy cured if he meets this prophet.’
She soon told her husband what she had heard. So, Naaman went to meet the prophet Elisha and returned completely cured from leprosy. The little girl had brought peace and happiness to Naaman’s house.Knowing that
the Sun Will Rise Again
This is a tale told in a country called Kiribati in the South Pacific. When the sun goes down in the evening, the children ask in a crying voice.
“Mom, the sun has fallen into the sea. It will be dark now, what should we do?”
The mothers reply with a story.
“That’s okay. You know, dwarves are living under the sea and they work all night to make a
new sun. They are working really hard to make one right now. They will push the sun up above the sea in the morning so it can shine on the world again. So don’t be sad when the sun is down.”
The dwarves do not make the sun and push it up over the sea, but it does rise again every
morning. The sun sets below the sea but it does not disappear forever. However, those who are
sad because now it is dark have no choice but to live miserably. On the other hand, those who wait for the sun to rise tomorrow morning are hopeful and happy.
Hardships are God-given Exercises
Sometimes we encounter hardships that we cannot handle with our own strength. Those are exercises that God gave us, saying, “Rely on me in times like this.” So, when you are in trouble,
you must believe and look to Him for help. Try and pray, “God, I have this kind of hardship. Please solve it for me.” Then you will realize, ‘Oh, I didn’t know it at the time, but God helped me like this’, ‘Looking back, I’ve been blessed this much’. Just as the captive little girl became happy after knowing God’s heart, our lives will also become happy and hopeful.
