Prophet Elisha and The Sons of The Prophets
생도들은 새 예배당을 지으러 갈 때 엘리사 선지자를 모시고 갔습니다. 자신들의 부족함을 알았기 때문에 하나님의 사람이 필요했던 것입니다.
하나님은 우리의 아버지이십니다. 하나님이 우리 아버지로서 우리에게 하시고 싶은 일을 하실 수 있게 하나님을 믿고 의지하십시오. 그러면 어떤 문제를 만나든지 하나님이 도우시는 축복을 누릴 수 있습니다.
강물에 도끼를 빠뜨리다
열왕기하 6장에 보면, 엘리사 선지자와 생도들의 이야기가 나옵니다. 한번은 한 생도가 말했습니다.
“선지자님, 우리가 지내는 곳이 좁습니다. 요단으로 가서 큰 예배당을 새로 지어야겠습니다.”
“그래, 가거라.”
선지자의 대답에 생도 중 한 명이 다시 말했습니다.
“선지자님도 저희와 함께 가시면 좋겠습니다.”
“나도 가겠다.”
그리하여 생도들은 엘리사 선지자와 함께 요단으로 갔습니다.
강가에서 나무를 베던 중, 한 생도가 소리쳤습니다.
“아이고, 선지자님! 도끼가 물에 빠졌습니다. 빌려온 도끼인데 어떡하죠?”
“도끼가 어디에 빠졌느냐?”
“이 앞입니다.”
엘리사 선지자가 나뭇가지를
베어 강물에 던졌습니다. 그러자 도끼날이 물 위로 떠올랐습니다.
“도끼를 건져내어라.”
생도는 선지자의 말대로 손을 뻗어 도끼를 되찾았습니다.
도끼를 빠뜨린 생도
옛날에는 나무를 자를 때 도끼를 썼습니다. 쇠로 만든 도끼날을 나무 자루에 끼워서 쓰다보면 도끼날이 무거워서 조금씩 흔들리면서 자루에서 빠져나오는 경우가 많았습니다. 경험이 많은 사람들은 도끼질을 하다가 ‘도끼날이 좀 빠졌네. 이번에 한 번 더 때리면 빠져 날아가겠다’ 하고 느낍니다. 그런데 일이 서툰 사람은 도끼날이 자루에서 빠져나갈 정도로 헐거워져도 모릅니다. 아마도 도끼를 물에 빠뜨린 생도는 일을 많이 안 해 본 사람이었나 봅니다. 빌려온 도끼를 잃어버렸으니 무척 난감했을 것입니다. 그런데 다행인 것은 그곳에 엘리사 선지자가 함께 간 것입니다.
엘리사 선지자가 있어서
엘리사 선지자는 나이가 많아서 예배당을 짓는 일을 하지 않아도 됩니다. “선지자님, 저희끼리 가서 잘하고 올게요. 선지자님은 여기서 쉬고 계세요” 하고, 생도들끼리 갈 수도 있었습니다. 그런데 생도들은 엘리사 선지자를 모시고 갔습니다. 생도가 엘리사 선지자에게 “우리와 같이 가시지요”라고 한 것은 “하나님의 사람인 선지자님이 우리와 함께 가셔야 합니다. 우리는 부족하니까 우리를 도와주셔야 합니다”라는 뜻입니다. 그들은 평소 어려운 일을 겪어봤고, 그럴 때 엘리사 선지자에게 도움을 받아보았기 때문에, 엘리사 선지자와 함께하기를 바랐던 것입니다.
우리가 세상을 살다보면 모든 것을 잘할 수는 없습니다. 또한 우리는 언제 어떤 사고가 일어나고 어떤 문제가 닥칠지 모릅니다. 그래서 가장 중요한 것이, 하나님을 가까이하는 것입니다.
예수님이 여기 계신다면
한번은 한 형제가 암에 걸렸는데 위중하다는 연락을 받았습니다. 병원에 찾아가보니 형제는 인기척 없이 침대에 누워있고, 형제의 아내와 어머니는 고개를 숙이고 눈물만 흘리고 있었습니다. 그때 내게 한 생각이 떠올랐습니다.
‘오늘 이 병실에 내가 안 오고 예수님이 오셨다면 어떤 일이 일어날까?’
만일에 그곳에 예수님이 오셨다면 예수님이 그 형제에게 말씀을 전해주시고 분명히 살려주시겠다는 마음이 들었습니다. 그리고 곧 ‘내 안에 예수님이 계시잖아. 그렇다면 오늘 예수님이 이 형제를 살리시겠구나’ 하는 마음이 들었습니다. 그래서 큰소리로 형제를 불렀습니다.
“어이, 김충환 형제, 나를 좀 쳐다봐.”
그러자 형제가 눈을 뜨고 나를 쳐다보았습니다.
“의사들은 자네가 이삼일 더 못 산대. 그런데 이곳에 예수님이 오셨다면 자네를 죽게 놔두고 그냥 가시겠나? 자네 아내와 어머니가 슬퍼하는 것을 못 본 체하시겠어? 내 안에 예수님이 계시고 자네에게도 예수님이 계셔. 그 예수님이 일하시면 암 이거, 아무것도 아니야.”
그렇게 형제와 이야기를 나누고 돌아왔습니다. 그리고 얼마 뒤 그 형제가 암이 다 나아 퇴원한다는 연락을 받았습니다.
하나님과 마음을 나누는 사람
나는 도끼가 떠오르는 것은 아직 못 봤지만, 하나님이 병든 사람을 고쳐주시고, 어려운 문제를 해결해 주시는 등 불가능한 일을 이루시는 것을 많이 경험했습니다. 그런 하나님이 우리와 함께하시는 것을 생각하면 얼마나 감사한지 모릅니다.
중요한 것은 그런 하나님과 마음을 나누는 사람이 되는 것입니다. 성경을 읽으며 하나님의 마음을 발견하고, 하나님의 말씀과 우리 생각이 다를 때 우리 생각을 버리고 하나님의 말씀을 믿고 나아가면 하나님의 능력을 경험할 수 있습니다.
Dropping Ax Head into the Water
In 2 Kings chapter 6 in the Bible, it talks about the prophet Elisha and the sons of the prophets. One day, one of the sons of the prophets said to Elisha.
“Prophet, this place has become too small for us to stay. Let us go to Jordan and build a larger chapel.”
“Sure, go ahead.”
Hearing the prophet’s answer, the other sons of the prophets said.
“It would be better if you can come with us, prophet.”
“I will go with you.”
The sons of the prophets went to Jordan with prophet Elisha. While cutting down trees by the lake, one man cried out.
“Oh, prophet! The ax head fell into the water. What should I do? It’s a borrowed ax!”
“Where did it fall?” asked Elisha.
“Right here, master.”
Elisha cut down a stick and threw it in the water. Then the ax head floated to the surface of the water.
“Take the ax out.”
The son of the prophet did as Elisha said, reached out his hands and took it.
The Son of the Prophet Who Dropped the Ax Head
Long ago, people used axes to cut down trees. An ax head made of iron was attached to a long wooden handle, and while using it, the heavy ax head would often become loose and fall off the handle. The experienced user could feel this as they used the ax. They can feel, ‘the ax head is a bit loose right now, it might fly off if I use it one more time.’ However, someone who is not experienced would not be able to tell the difference until the ax head falls off. Perhaps the one who dropped the ax into the water was inexperienced. It must have been very distressing for him to lose a borrowed ax. But fortunately for him, the prophet Elisha was with them.
Prophet Elisha is Here
Prophet Elisha was old; he did not have to do manual labor to build a chapel. The sons of the prophets could have said “Prophet, we will go on our own and work hard to build it. You should stay and rest here” and gone ahead by themselves. However, they asked the prophet to go with them. When they said, “Please come with us,” they meant, “Prophet Elisha, the servant of God, must come with us. We are so lacking and need your help.” They had been through difficult times before and each time they received help from the prophet Elisha which is why they wanted to be with him.
As we live our lives, we cannot be good at everything. Moreover, we cannot predict when a disaster might occur or what problems will arise. Therefore, the most important thing is to be close to God.
If Jesus were Here
One time, I received word that a certain brother was diagnosed with cancer and in critical condition. When I visited the hospital, he was lying in bed motionless, his wife and mother had their heads down and tears were running down their faces. Then, a thought struck me.
‘What would happen if it was Jesus who came into this hospital room instead of me?’
I believed that if Jesus were here, He would preach to the brother and surely save him. And soon I had the heart thinking, ‘Jesus is within me. Then He will save this brother today.’ I spoke the brother with a loud voice.
“Hey, brother Kim Chung-hwan, look at me.”
The brother opened his eyes to look.
“The doctors are saying you have maybe two, three days left to live. But if Jesus were here, would He leave you to die? Would he turn a blind eye to your wife and mother’s sadness? Jesus is in me. He is in you, too. If Jesus works, this cancer of yours is nothing.”
I talked with the brother for a while longer and left. Not long after that day, I received a call from him. He said that he had recovered from cancer and was getting discharged from the hospital.
A Person Who Shares Their Heart with God
I have not seen an ax rise from the water, but I have experienced countless times when God accomplished the impossible, including healing the sick and solving difficult problems. I cannot express enough how grateful I am to think such a God is with us.
The important thing is to become a person who shares their heart with God. We can discover the heart of God while reading the Bible, and when our thoughts differ from the Word of God, we can experience God’s power if we abandon our thoughts and move forward believing in His Word.
