Cornelius, the First Gentile to Be Saved
베드로가 고넬료에게 복음을 전해 고넬료 가족이 구원을 받았습니다. 그 일을 시작으로 이방인에게 복음의 문이 열렸고, 이방인인 우리도 구원받고 천국에 갈 수 있는 길을 열어주셔서 감사합니다. 이러한 귀한 복을 값없이 주셨는데, 한 사람도 빠짐없이 복음을 믿고 하나님께 영광을 돌리며 축복된 삶을 살았으면 좋겠습니다.
하나님을 경외한 고넬료
사도행전 10장에 가이사랴에 사는 고넬료라는 사람이 나옵니다. 그는 로마군의 백부장이었습니다. 성경은 고넬료에 대해 “그가 경건하여 온 집으로 더불어 하나님을 경외하며 백성을 많이 구제하고 하나님께 항상 기도하더니”(사도행전 10:2)라고 이야기했습니다. 백부장은 군사 백 명을 이끌고 이스라엘의 한 지역을 관할하는 사람입니다. 그런 사람이 어떻게 하나님을 알고 하나님을 믿게 되었는지 모르지만, 고넬료는 하나님을 열심히 섬겼습니다.
하루는 고넬료가 기도하는데 환상 중에 하나님의 사자가 나타났습니다.
“고넬료야, 네가 기도하고 구제한 것을 하나님이 아시고 기억하셨다. 사람들을 욥바에 보내 베드로라 하는 시몬을 청하라. 저는 피장 시몬의 집에 머물고 있는데 그 집은 해변에 있느니라.”
고넬료는 하나님의 사자가 말한 대로 사람들을 욥바로 보냈습니다.
베드로에게 보여주신 환상
이튿날 고넬료가 보낸 사람들이 욥바 성에 가까이 왔을 즈음, 베드로가 기도하려고 지붕에 올라갔습니다. 기도를 하다가 비몽사몽 중에 하늘이 열리고 한 그릇이 내려오는 것을 보았습니다. 큰 보자기 같은 그릇 안에는 네 발로 땅을 걸어 다니는 짐승과 기는 것들, 하늘을 날아다니는 것들이 있었습니다. 그때 소리가 들렸습니다.
“베드로야, 일어나 잡아먹어라.”
“주여, 그럴 수 없나이다. 속되고 깨끗하지 않은 것을 내가 언제든지 먹지 아니하였습니다.”
그러자 다시 소리가 났습니다.
“하나님께서 깨끗하게 하신 것을 네가 속되다 하지 말라.”
그런 일이 세 번 있은 뒤 그릇이 하늘로 올라갔습니다.
때마침 고넬료가 보낸 사람들이 도착해 베드로를 찾았습니다. 베드로가 물었습니다.
“내가 너희가 찾는 사람인데 무슨 일로 왔느냐?”
“저희는 백부장 고넬료가 보낸 사람들입니다. 고넬료는 의인이요, 하나님을 경외해서 모든 유대인들이 칭찬하는 사람입니다. 고넬료가 거룩한 천사의 지시를 받아 베드로를 집으로 초청하여 말씀을 들으려고 합니다.”
성령이 베드로에게 ‘의심치 말고 그들과 함께 가라’고 이미 이야기했기 때문에, 베드로가 이튿날 그들과 함께 가이사랴로 떠났습니다.
구원받은 이방인 고넬료
베드로가 고넬료의 집에 도착해서 보니 이방인들이 모여 있었습니다. 만약 베드로에게 이방인을 차별하는 마음이 없었다면 말씀을 듣고 싶어 하는 그들에게 얼른 복음을 전했을 것입니다. 그런데 베드로는 ‘하나님이 깨끗하게 하신 것을 속되다고 하지 말라’는 환상을 보았고 성령의 인도로 고넬료의 집까지 왔지만, 이방인에게 복음을 전하는 것을 달갑지 않게 생각하고 말했습니다.
“유대인으로서 이방인과 교제하고 가까이하는 것이 하나님의 법을 어기는 것인 줄은 너희도 알 것이다. 그런데 하나님께서 내게 아무도 속되다 하거나 깨끗지 않다고 하지 말라고 하셔서 부름을 사양치 않고 왔노라. 무슨 일로 나를 불렀는가?”
그러자 고넬료가 나흘 전 하나님의 사자가 자신에게 말한 내용을 이야기하고 또 이렇게 말했습니다.
“우리는 주께서 당신에게 명하신 모든 것을 듣고자 하여 다 하나님 앞에 있습니다.”
고넬료의 이야기를 듣고 베드로는 ‘하나님이 이방인들에게도 복음 전하기를 원하시는구나’ 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 그래서 처음으로 이방인에게 복음을 전했습니다. 고넬료의 가족과 친구들이 복음을 듣고 구원받았고, 그들에게 성령이 임했습니다. 베드로와 함께 간 사람들이 그 광경을 보고 ‘아, 이방인에게도 하나님이 역사하시는구나!’ 하고 깜짝 놀랐습니다.
모든 사람들에게 열린 복음의 문
그때까지 유대인들은 이방인들을 복음 전할 대상으로 생각하지 않았습니다. 하지만 하나님은 오래 전에 이방인들이 구원받는 때가 온다고 약속하셨습니다. 하나님이 유대인을 세우신 이유는, 유대인들이 하나님을 믿어 복을 받는 모습을 보고 이방인들도 따라서 하나님을 믿어 복을 받게 하기 위해서였습니다. 그 사실을 모르는 유대인들은 이방인들은 하나님의 축복을 받지 못한다고 생각했습니다. 그러나 이방인의 때가 되자 고넬료가 구원받는 일을 시작으로 이방인들이 구원받는 역사가 일어났습니다.
하나님은 인간을 사랑하십니다. 죄를 짓고 악한 인간들인데도 하나님이 은혜를 베풀어 구원하시고 복을 받게 하시는 것을 볼 때 정말 감사합니다. 나는 유대인이 아니지만 구원받아 복음을 만방에 전파하고, 그렇게 일할 때 성령이 도우시는 것을 보며 너무나 감사했습니다.
이제 유대인, 이방인 할 것 없이 예수 그리스도의 피로 구원받는 놀라운 역사가 일어나서 함께 복음을 위해 살기를 바랍니다. 예수님의 피로 죄 사함을 받고 하늘나라에 가는 귀한 복을 값없이 주셨는데, 한 사람도 빠짐없이 복음을 믿고 구원받아 하나님께 영광을 돌리며 축복된 삶을 살았으면 좋겠습니다.
Cornelius, One That Feared God
In Acts chapter 10 in the Bible, there is a man named Cornelius who lived in Caesarea. He was a Roman centurion. Cornelius is written as follows in the Bible, “A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway” (Acts 10:2). A centurion is a man who leads one hundred soldiers and has jurisdiction over an area in Israel. It is not clear how such a person came to know God and believe in Him, but Cornelius served God diligently.
One day, while Cornelius was praying, an angel of God appeared in a vision.
“Cornelius, your prayers and your alms are come up for a memorial before God. And now send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter. He lives with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea side.”
Listening to the words of the angel, Cornelius sent people to Joppa.
Visions Shown to Peter
The next day, as the men sent by Cornelius approached the city of Joppa, Peter went up on the roof to pray. During his prayer, he fell into a trance and saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him. Inside the vessel, which looked like a great sheet, were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. Then came a voice to him.
“Rise, Peter. Kill, and eat.”
“Not so, Lord. I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.”
And the voice spoke unto him again.
“What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.”
After this happened three times, the vessel was taken up again into heaven.
Just in time, the men sent by Cornelius arrived and looked for Peter. Peter asked.
“I am the person you are looking for. What brings you here?”
“We are sent by Cornelius the centurion. He is a just man, and one that fears God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews. He was instructed from God by a holy angel to send for you into his house and to hear your words.”
The Holy Spirit had already told Peter, ‘Go with them, doubting nothing,’ so Peter went with them to Caesarea the next day.
Cornelius, The Saved Gentile
As Peter arrived at Cornelius’ house, he saw that many Gentiles had gathered. If Peter had not discriminated against the Gentiles, he would have quickly preached the gospel to those who wanted to hear the Word. However, although Peter had a vision telling him, ‘What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common,’ and came to Cornelius’ house guided by the Holy Spirit, he was not happy preaching the gospel to the Gentiles.
“You know how that it is an unlawful thing for a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation. But God had shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean, therefore I came unto you as soon as I was sent for without refusing. Why have you sent for me?”
Then Cornelius recounted what the angel of God had told him four days ago and said:
“We are all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded to you by God.”
Hearing Cornelius’ story, Peter thought, ‘God wants to preach the gospel to the Gentiles as well.’ For the first time, he preached the gospel to the Gentiles. Cornelius’ family and friends heard the gospel and were saved, and the Holy Spirit came upon them. The people who came with Peter witnessed the scene and said in astonishment, ‘Ah, God works upon the Gentiles, too!’
The Open Door of the Gospel to All
Until then, Jews did not think preaching the gospel was intended for Gentiles. But God promised long ago that there would be a time for Gentiles to be saved. The reason why God chose the Jews was for the Gentiles to see how the Jews believe in God and receive blessings, so they would also believe in God and receive blessings, too. Jews who did not know about the truth thought that Gentiles cannot receive God’s blessing. However, when the time of the Gentiles came, Gentiles began to recieve salvation starting with Cornelius being saved.
God loves people. I am truly thankful when I see that God gives grace to save and bless us even though we are sinful and wicked people. I am not a Jew, but I am saved. When I spread the gospel to all places, I am so grateful to see the Holy Spirit helping me do the work.
Now, I hope that this amazing work of salvation by the blood of Jesus Christ will take place, for both Jews and Gentiles, and we can all live together for the gospel. Jesus’ blood gave us the priceless blessing of receiving forgiveness of sins and going to the kingdom of heaven. I hope that every person believes in the gospel, receives salvation, gives glory to God, and lives a blessed life.
