Through Jesus, Not the Law
하나님이 주신 십계명
구약성경에 보면 이스라엘 백성이 애굽에서 종살이를 하다가 가나안으로 향하는 이야기가 나옵니다. 백성들이 시내산을 지날 때 하나님이 모세를 통해 백성들에게 십계명을 주셨습니다. “나 외에는 다른 신들을 네게 있게 말라.” “너를 위하여 우상을 만들지 말라.” “여호와의 이름을 망령되이 일컫지 말라.” “안식일을 기억하여 거룩히 지키라.” “네 부모를 공경하라.” “살인하지 말지니라.” “간음하지 말지니라.” “도적질하지 말지니라.” “네 이웃에 대하여 거짓 증거 하지 말지니라.” “네 이웃의 집을 탐내지 말지니라.”
이렇게 열 개의 계명을 정해주시고 잘 지키면 복을 받고 못 지키면 저주를 받는다고 하셨습니다.
금송아지를 만든 사람들
하나님이 모세에게 율법을 주신 날, 백성들은 모세를 기다리고 있었습니다. 그런데 모세가 더디 오자 답답한 마음에 금송아지를 만들었습니다. 금송아지를 보고 자신들을 애굽에서 인도하여 낸 신이라고 했습니다. 백성들은 금송아지에게 제사를 드리고 춤을 추었습니다. 하나님을 대신할 우상을 만든 것입니다.
그때 모세가 하나님이 십계명을 적어주신 돌판 두 개를 들고 산에서 내려왔습니다. 모세는 백성들의 악한 모습을 보고 돌판을 던져 깨뜨렸습니다. 그리고 백성들을 심판하여 삼천 명을 진멸했습니다. 율법이 내려온 첫날부터 백성들이 율법을 어겨 저주를 받은 것입니다.
지킬 수 없는 율법
그때부터 백성들은 십계명을 지키겠다고 약속하고 법을 지키기 위해 애를 썼습니다. 그런데 아무도 십계명을 다 지키지 못했습니다. 그래서 복은커녕 저주를 받았습니다. 지금까지도 하나님이 정해주신 율법을 완벽하게 다 지킨 사람이 없습니다. 그런데도 사람들이 ‘열심히 노력하면 되지, 못 지킬 게 뭐가 있어?’ ‘나는 지킬 수 있을 것 같은데…’ 하며 십계명을 지켜서 복을 받으려고 합니다. 율법을 잘 지키려고 애쓰고 노력하면서 자신이 잘 지키고 있다고 잘못 생각합니다.
만일에 자동차를 운전하다가 교통법규를 어겨서 잡혔을 때, 앞으로 다시는 법을 어기지 않고 잘 지키겠다고 빌면 용서가 됩니까? 이미 법을 어겼기 때문에 처벌을 받아야 합니다. 운전하다가 잘못해서 벼랑으로 떨어지면서 ‘앞으로 사고 내지 말아야지’ 하고 결심하면 살 수 있습니까? 말이 안 되는 얘기입니다. 마찬가지로 아무리 착하게 살았더라도 율법을 하나라도 어기면 반드시 저주를 받습니다.
예수님의 탄생
여기서 꼭 알아야 하는 것이 있습니다. 로마서 3장 20절에 “그러므로 율법의 행위로 그의 앞에 의롭다 하심을 얻을 육체가 없나니 율법으로는 죄를 깨달음이니라”는 말씀이 있습니다. 하나님은 우리가 율법을 지켜서 의롭게 될 수 없고 저주받을 수밖에 없음을 아시고, 우리를 죄에서 건져내실 계획을 세우셨습니다. 바로 예수님을 이 땅에 보내시는 것이었습니다.
“헤롯왕 때에 예수께서 유대 베들레헴에서 나시매 동방으로부터 박사들이 예루살렘에 이르러 말하되, ‘유대인의 왕으로 나신 이가 어디 계시뇨? 우리가 동방에서 그의 별을 보고 그에게 경배하러 왔노라’ 하니 헤롯왕과 온 예루살렘이 듣고 소동한지라.”(마태복음 2:1~3)
사탄은 예수님이 이 땅에 오셔서 죄를 씻는 것을 막으려고 했습니다. 그래서 헤롯왕을 이용해 아기 예수를 찾아 죽이려고 했지만 하나님이 예수님을 지키셨습니다.
예수님이 이 땅에 오신 이유
예수님이 장성한 후, 세례 요한을 만나 세례를 받으셨습니다. 예수님이 세례를 받으신 다음 날, 요한이 예수님을 보고 “보라, 세상 죄를 지고 가는 하나님의 어린양이로다!”라고 말했습니다. 구약 시대에 사람들이 죄를 씻기 위해 양이나 염소를 제물로 삼아 머리에 안수하여 죄를 넘기는 것과 같이, 세례 요한이 예수님에게 안수하여 세상 죄를 넘긴 것입니다. 얼마 후, 예수님은 십자가에서 피 흘리고 돌아가셨습니다. 그때 우리 모든 죄가 씻어졌습니다.
만일에 우리가 율법을 다 지켜서 천국에 갈 수 있다면 예수님이 이 땅에 오실 필요가 있었을까요? 우리가 율법을 지키지 못하기 때문에 예수님이 이 땅에 오신 것입니다. 그런데 지금도 자기가 착하게 살려고 노력하고 율법을 지키려고 애쓰는 것은 성경을 잘못 알고 있는 것입니다.
예수님이 필요한 우리
하나님은 우리가 죄를 지을 수밖에 없는 사람들이라는 것을 깨우쳐주시기 위해 율법을 주셨습니다.
사람들이 율법을 지키려고 애를 쓰다가 지킬 수 없는 자신을 발견하고 ‘하나님, 저는 율법을 지킬 수 있을 줄 알았는데 못 지키네요.
저를 불쌍히 여겨주세요’ 하는 마음으로 나아오기를 원하신 것입니다. 그럴 때, 예수님을 믿고 은혜로 구원받게 해놓으셨습니다. 하나님은 우리가 십계명이 필요한 것이 아니라 예수님이 필요한 사람들임을 정확하게 알고 예수님을 믿게 하셨습니다.
The Ten Commandments Given by God
In the Old Testament, there is a story about the Israelites heading to Canaan after being enslaved in Egypt. When they were passing through Mount Sinai, God gave them the Ten Commandments through Moses. “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.” “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain.” “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” “Honor thy father and thy mother.” “Thou shalt not kill.” “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” “Thou shalt not steal.” “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.” “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house.” God said if the people kept the Ten Commandments, they would be blessed, and if they did not, they would be cursed.
The People Who Made the Golden Calf
The day God gave Moses the law, the people were waiting for him to return. However, when Moses didn’t come down from the mount quickly, the people became frustrated and decided to make a molten calf out of gold. They called the golden calf their god which brought them up out of the land of Egypt. The Israelites brought offerings and sacrificed to it and rose up to dance. They had made themselves an idol to replace God.
Then Moses came down from the mountain carrying two stone tablets on which God had written the Ten Commandments. When Moses saw the wickedness of the people, he cast the tablets down and broke them. He judged the people and three thousand men died. The people were cursed because they had broken the law on the very first day it was given.
The Law that Cannot Be Kept
From then on, the people promised to keep the Ten Commandments and tried hard to keep the law. But no one could keep all of the Ten Commandments. So, instead of being blessed, they were cursed. To this day, no one has perfectly kept the laws of God. However, people say, ‘You just have to try harder, what is there that you can’t do if you try?’ ‘I think I can keep it…’ and try to keep the Ten Commandments to be blessed. The mistake they are making is thinking they are keeping the law well just through their efforts of trying.
If you were driving a car and got caught for violating the traffic laws, would you be forgiven if you begged you would never break the law again? You must be punished since you already violated the law. If you are driving and accidentally fall off a cliff, could you survive by determining that you will not cause accidents in the future? It is nonsense. Likewise, no matter how good you live, if you break even one law, you will be cursed.
Birth of Jesus
Here’s what we need to know. In the Bible in Romans chapter 3 verse 20 says, “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” God knew that we could not be justified by keeping the law and that we couldn’t avoid being cursed, so He made a plan to save us from sin. The plan was sending Jesus to this earth.
“Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.” (Matthew 2:1-3)
Satan tried to stop Jesus from coming to earth and wash away sins. So, he used King Herod to find baby Jesus to kill Him, but God protected Him.
The Reason Jesus Came to Earth
When Jesus became an adult, He was baptized by John the Baptist. The day after He was baptized, John pointed at Jesus and said, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world!” Just as in the Old Testament era, people sacrificed sheep or goats and laid their hands on its head to pass over their sins, John the Baptist laid his hands on Jesus and passed over the sins of the world. Soon after, Jesus shed His blood and died on the cross. That is when all our sins were washed away.
If we are able to keep all the laws and enter into the heaven, was there a need for Jesus to come to earth? Jesus came to earth because we cannot keep the whole law. Nonetheless, if you are still trying to be good and keep the law, you are misunderstanding the Bible.
We need Jesus
God gave us the law to show us that we are people who can only commit sin. He wanted people to try hard to keep the law and when they realized they were unable to do it, then they would come to Him with a heart saying, ‘God, I thought I could keep the law, but I can’t. Please have mercy on me.’ That’s the time God has prepared us to believe in Jesus and be saved by grace. Knowing exactly that we are people who need Jesus, not the Ten Commandments, God had us believe in Jesus.
