아브라함의 실수
하나님은 아브라함을 통해 많은 사람들이 복을 받게 하려고 아브라함을 선택하셨습니다. 하나님은 “땅의 모든 족속이 너를 인하여 복을 얻을 것이니라.” 하시며 그를 가나안으로 인도하셨습니다. 그런데 그 땅에 기근이 찾아왔습니다. 하나님이 아브라함에게 ‘기근 가운데 도우시는 하나님’을 경험하게 하려고 하신 것입니다. 그런데 아브라함은 기근을 피해 애굽으로 갔습니다. 그곳에서 애굽 왕 바로에게 아내를 빼앗겼다가, 하나님의 은혜로 아내를 다시 찾아 가나안으로 돌아왔습니다.
아브라함이 한 실수는 그뿐만이 아닙니다. 하나님이 아브라함에게 “내가 너로 큰 민족을 이루고 네게 복을 주어 네 이름을 창대케 하리니 너는 복의 근원이 될지라.” (창세기 12:2) 하셨습니다. 하나님이 아브라함으로 큰 민족을 이루게 하겠다고 하셨으니 분명히 자식을 주실 것입니다. 그런데 아브라함은 하나님의 약속보다 형편을 보고 애굽 여인 하갈과 동침해서 이스마엘을 낳았습니다.
이런 실수들을 통해 아브라함은 자기 생각을 따라서 인간적인 방법으로 한 일들이 얼마나 바보스러운지 알았습니다. 아브라함에게 수없이 많은 실수가 있었지만 하나님은 아브라함과 함께 계셨습니다.
아브라함과 롯의 차이
아브라함이나 롯이나 처음에는 똑같이 육신적인 사람이었습니다. 그런데 아브라함은 조금씩 하나님의 영향을 받았고, 롯은 사탄의 영향을 받았습니다. 롯은 재물에 마음이 많았습니다. 아브라함 역시 그랬지만, 그에게는 하나님을 믿는 믿음이 있어서 하나님과 동행했습니다. 그에 반해 롯은 하나님과 상관없이 재물에만 마음이 있었습니다. 그 결과로 아브라함의 목자들과 롯의 목자들 사이에 다툼이 일어났을 때 롯은 아브라함을 떠났습니다. 롯은 인간이 보기에 좋은, 물이 넉넉하고 평지인 소돔과 고모라 땅으로 가고, 아브라함은 하나님을 의지하며 가나안에 머물렀습니다. 이것이 아브라함과 롯의 차이입니다.
평지로 간 롯은 그곳에서 전쟁이 일어나 포로로 잡혀가고, 재산도 모두 빼앗겼습니다. 아브라함이 그 소식을 듣고 사람들을 이끌고 가서 롯과 사람들과 재물들을 다 찾아왔습니다. 그런데 롯은 여전히 소돔에 머물러 있었습니다. 결국 롯은 소돔 성이 멸망할 때 모든 것을 잃고, 아내는 소금 기둥이 되었으며, 그는 두 딸과 동침해서 모압과 암몬의 조상이 되었습니다.
아브라함과 롯의 이야기를 통해
아브라함이나 롯이나 똑같이 실수하기도 했고 잘못하기도 했습니다. 그런데 롯은 하나님 없이 세상에 속했습니다. 아브라함은 그렇지 않았습니다. 잘못하면서도 마음이 하나님을 향했습니다.
성경은, 이 시대에 구원받은 뒤 하나님을 떠나는 사람의 이야기와 하나님의 영역에 속해 있는 사람의 이야기를 롯과 아브라함의 이야기로 아주 분명히 가르쳐주고 있습니다. 구원받은 뒤 실수도 하지만 아브라함처럼 믿음을 가지고 하나님께 속한 사람이 있고, 하나님의 은혜를 떠난 롯 같은 사람이 있습니다. 그 사실을 지금 우리로 하여금 보고 깨닫게 하려고 성경에 아브라함과 롯의 이야기가 기록되어 있습니다.
믿음의 사람 아브라함
창세기 24장에 보면, 아브라함이 아들 이삭의 아내를 얻기 위해 늙은 종을 자신이 떠나온 고향으로 보냈습니다. 늙은 종은 주인이 그렇게 하는 것이 이해가 되지 않고, 너무나 부담스러웠습니다.
‘늙은 나를 따라서 올 아가씨가 누가 있을까?’
그래서 그는 아브라함에게 “만일 여자가 나를 따라서 이 땅으로 오려고 하지 않으면 내가 주인의 아들을 그 땅으로 데리고 갈까요?”라고 물었습니다. 아브라함은 이렇게 대답했습니다.
“그렇게 하지 말라. 하나님이 사자를 네 앞서 보내실 것이다. 네가 거기서 내 아들을 위하여 아내를 택해라.”
아브라함에게는 하나님이 며느리를 주신다는 믿음이 있었습니다. 늙은 종은 아브라함이 가진 믿음을 따라서 메소포타미아로 갔고, 하나님의 인도로 리브가를 만나서 가나안 땅으로 데리고 왔습니다.
하나님을 믿는 사람을 반드시 복 주신다
오늘날 구원받은 많은 사람들이 믿음으로 나아가는 것을 부담스러워합니다. 왜 그럴까요? 하나님이 자신과 함께하실 것을 믿지 않기 때문입니다. 그러나 믿음으로 가는 길은 하나님이 도우십니다. 구원받은 사람이 하나님을 믿지 않고 사는 것은 사탄에게 기회를 주는 것으로, 결국 멸망의 길로 가고 맙니다.
아브라함은 어려움을 겪으면서 믿음의 사람이 되었습니다. 하나님은 당신의 사람들을 끝까지 지키십니다. 그런데 우리 스스로 어려울 것 같다는 마음을 가지면, 마음이 하나님에게서 점점 멀어지고 결국 하나님을 떠납니다. 나는 지금까지 하나님 안에서 지내면서 그런 사람을 많이 보았습니다. 하나님은 당신을 믿는 사람을 반드시 지키시고 복을 주십니다.
Abraham’s Mistake
God chose Abraham in order to bless many people through him. God led him to Canaan saying, “In thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed.” However, there was a famine there because God wanted Abraham to experience ‘God who helps in famine’. But Abraham ran away from the famine and went to Egypt. There, his wife was taken away by Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, but by the grace of God, she was returned to Abraham and they went back to Canaan.
That was not the only mistake Abraham made. God said to him, “And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing.” (Genesis 12:2) God said that He would use Abraham to create a great nation, so He would certainly give him children. But rather than relying on God’s promise, Abraham looked at the circumstances and went into Hagar, an Egyptian woman, and she gave birth to Ishmael.
Through these mistakes, Abraham realized how foolish it was to follow his own thoughts and do things in human ways. He made a lot of mistakes, but God was always with him.
The Difference Between Abraham and Lot
At first, Abraham and Lot were both equally fleshly people. However, little by little Abraham was influenced by God and Lot was influenced by Satan. Lot cared a lot about wealth. Abraham was the same, but he had faith in God, so he walked with Him. On the other hand, instead of having a heart for God, Lot only had a heart for wealth. As a result, when there was an argument between Abraham and Lot’s shepherds, Lot left Abraham. He went to the plain of Sodom and Gomorrah, where it was well watered everywhere, while Abraham relied on God and stayed in Canaan. This is the difference between Abraham and Lot.
Lot, who went to the cities of the plain, was taken captive along with all his property when a war broke out. When Abraham heard the news, he led his people to rescue Lot, his people and all his possessions. But Lot still stayed in Sodom. Eventually, he lost everything when the city of Sodom fell. His wife became a pillar of salt and he lay with his two daughters, becoming the ancestor of Moab and Ammon.
Through the Story of Abraham and Lot
Abraham and Lot both made mistakes and did wrong. Lot belonged to a world without God, but not Abraham; his heart turned to God even when he made mistakes.
The Bible clearly teaches us about people after receiving salvation; those who leave God and those who belong to God’s realm, through the story of Abraham and Lot. After receiving salvation, there are people who make mistakes, but like Abraham, they belong to God with faith in Him. However, there are those who leave God’s grace like Lot did. The story of Abraham and Lot was recorded in the Bible so that we can see and understand that fact.
Abraham, the Man of Faith
In Genesis chapter 24, Abraham sent an old servant to his hometown to find a wife for his son, Isaac. The old servant could not understand his master’s heart and felt very burdened.
‘What young woman would follow an old person like me?’
So, he asked Abraham, “If the woman does not want to follow me to this land, shall I take the master’s son to that land?”
Abraham replied, “Don’t do that. God will send His angel before you. You will take a wife for my son from there.”
Abraham had the faith that God would give him a daughter-in-law. The old servant followed Abraham’s faith and went to Mesopotamia, met Rebekah by God’s guidance and brought her to Canaan.
God Surely Blesses Those Who Believe in Him
Many people today feel burdened walking forward in faith. Why is that? It’s because they don’t believe that God will be with them. However, God helps us to walk the way to faith. But, when a saved person lives without believing God, it gives Satan a chance to take over and eventually that life is led to destruction.
Abraham became a man of faith through difficulties. God holds His people to the end. But if we have a heart thinking it might be difficult on our own, our heart gradually moves away from God and eventually leaves Him. Until now, I have seen many such people while living in God. He surely protects and blesses those who believe in Him.
