Salmon Who Became the Ancestor of David
하나님을 의지하여 여리고로
옛날 이스라엘에 살몬이라는 사람이 있었습니다. 어느 날 여호수아 장군이 살몬을 찾았습니다.
“부르셨습니까. 여호수아 장군님!”
“그래, 중대한 일이 있어서 너를 불렀다. 지금 우리는 여리고를 공격하려고 한다. 그런데 여리고를 잘 몰라서 전쟁을 준비할 수가 없다. 네가 한 사람을 데리고 여리고에 정탐을 다녀와라.”
여리고 성에 들어갔다가 잡히면 죽을 수도 있습니다. 살몬은 그것을 잘 알지만 안 갈 수 없었습니다.
“예, 여호수아 장군님. 지금까지 이스라엘을 도우신 하나님께서 나를 도우실 줄 믿습니다.”
며칠 뒤, 살몬은 부모님께 인사 드리고 다른 군인 한 명과 여리고로 향했습니다. 두 사람 모두 긴장이 되었습니다. 먼저 성문을 통과해야 하는데 마침 성문을 지키는 군인들이 장난을 치며 놀고 있었습니다.
“이때다!”
하나님의 은혜로 무사히 성안에 들어갔지만 여전히 긴장되고 두려웠습니다. 살몬과 군인은 높은 성벽에 있는 한 집에 들어갔습니다. 기생 라합의 집이었습니다.
“어서 오세요. 차를 한 잔 드릴까요?”
“고맙습니다.”
살몬은 라합의 집에 머물며 틈틈이 여리고의 사정을 알아보았습니다.
라합을 준비하신 하나님
어느 날, 여리고 사람들이 기생 라합의 집에 살몬과 정탐꾼이 있는 것을 보았습니다.
“저 사람들 수상한데? 이스라엘 정탐이 틀림없어. 왕에게 신고하자.”
여리고 왕이 기생 라합의 집으로 군인들을 보냈습니다.
‘쾅쾅쾅!’
“문 열어라! 어서 문 열어!”
‘우리는 죽었다.’
이때 라합이 말했습니다.
“조용히 따라오세요! 빨리요!”
두 사람이 라합을 따라 빠른 걸음으로 지붕 위로 올라갔습니다.
“빨리 여기 엎드리세요.”
두 사람이 지붕 위에 엎드리자 라합이 재빨리 삼대로 두 사람을 덮었습니다. 누가 봐도 삼대를 햇볕에 말리는 것 같이 보였습니다. 라합은 다시 총총걸음으로 대문으로 갔습니다.
“다 알고 왔으니 어서 문을 열란 말이야!”
“알았어요. 지금 열게요.”
대문에 빗장이 벗겨지자 군인들이 쏟아져 들어왔습니다. 대장이 라합에게 물었습니다. “여기 낯선 사람들 왔지? 그 사람들 어디 있어?”
“그 이상한 사람들 말이에요? 조금 전까지 여기에 있었죠. 성문 닫는 시간이 몇 시냐고 물어서 6시라고 하니까 성문 쪽으로 달려갔어요. 빨리 쫓아가보세요.”
군인들이 달려나가자 곧 성문이 닫혔습니다.
살몬과 기생 라합
라합은 대문을 잠그고 지붕 위로 올라갔습니다.
“이제 안심하세요. 군인들이 다 떠났어요.”
살몬은 라합이 너무나 고마웠습 니다.
“라합, 삼대 아래서 간을 졸이며 생각했어요. 왜 우리를 숨겨주었습니까?”
“나는 당신들이 누구인지 첫눈에 알아봤어요. 당신들 이스라엘에서 온 정탐 맞지요? 나는 하나님이 당신들이 애굽에서 나올 때 홍해 물을 말리신 일과, 광야를 지날 때 도우신 일, 그리고 아모리 나라를 멸망시킨 일 모두 알아요. 이번에는 여리고를 멸망시킬 것도요. 내가 당신들을 살려주었으니 당신도 우리 가족을 살려준다고 약속해주세요.”
“좋아요. 약속할게요. 우리가 여리고에 쳐들어올 때 모두 이 방에 모여 있어요. 그리고 잘 보이게 창문에 붉은 줄을 매달아요. 유월절에 피를 문설주에 칠해서 심판을 피한 것처럼요. 누구든지 붉은 줄이 달린 집 안에 있으면 죽지 않게 할게요.”
살몬은 기생 라합을 준비해서 자신을 지켜준 하나님께 감사했습니다. 두 사람은 줄을 타고 성벽 아래로 내려가서 무사히 여호수아에게 돌아갔습니다. 그리고 여리고에서 하나님이 어떻게 자기들을 지켜주셨는지 이야기했습니다.
붉은 줄의 약속
드디어 그날이 왔습니다. 이스라엘 백성이 모여 여리고 성을 일곱 번 돌았습니다. 그리고 함께 큰소리로 외치자 그 크고 견고한 여리고 성이 무너져 내렸습니다. 살몬은 누구보다 더 빨리 라합의 집으로 달려갔습니다.
“살몬, 여기예요. 여기 붉은 줄 이 있어요.”
라합, 살몬 두 사람이 반갑게 만났습니다.
“이제 우리는 살았다!”
라합의 가족들이 모두 집 안에서 기다리고 있었습니다. 붉은 줄을 매단 집 안에서. 그들은 모두 약속대로 구원을 받았습니다. 얼마 후, 살몬은 라합과 결혼을 했습니다. 라합이 아들을 낳아 이름을 보아스라고 지었습니다. 그 후 보아스는 오벳을, 오벳은 이새를, 이새는 다윗을 낳았습니다. 다윗의 조상 가운데 위대한 살몬이 있었습니다.
어려움 속에서 하나님의 역사가 지난해에는 코로나19로 인해 전 세계가 어려움을 겪었습니다. 많은 사람이 아프거나 죽었고 두려움에 떨었습니다. 그러한 중에 하나님의 은혜로 전 세계 많은 나라에 복음이 전해져 정말 감사했습니다. 무엇보다, 어려움이 있었지만 하나님이 도우신 것이 감사한 한 해였습니다. 이제 2020년이 가고 새해가 찾아왔습니다. 새해에는 어떤 일이 있 을까요? 살몬이 여리고성에 갔을 때 라합을 예비해 살몬을 도우신 것처럼, 하나님께서 여러분이 어려움을 만날 때 도우시고 지켜주실 것입니다. 그리고 새해에도 구원의 기쁜 소식을 이어가실 것입니다.
Into Jericho, Relying on God
Long ago in Israel, there was a man named Salmon. One day, Joshua called Salmon in.
“I heard you called for me, Sir!”
“Yes, I called you for a great matter. We are planning to attack Jericho. However, we cannot prepare for the war because we don’t know much about the place. Take a man with you and go spy on the land, especially the city of Jericho.”
Salmon knew very well that if he enters and gets caught in Jericho, the land of the enemy, he might die, but he could not refuse to go.
“Yes, Sir. I believe that God, who has helped Israel until now, will also help me.”
A few days later, after saying good-bye to his parents, Salmon and another soldier headed to Jericho. Of course, they were nervous because they had to get through the gate. Fortunately, the soldiers guarding the gate were busy playing around with each other.
Then the opportunity came,
“Now, let’s go!” They entered the land safely by the grace of God, but they still felt nervous and afraid. Salmon and the other spy entered a house on a high wall. It was Rahab the harlot’s house.
“Welcome. Would you like a cup of tea?”
“Yes, thank you.” They stayed at Rahab’s house and got information about Jericho’s situation from time to time.
God Prepared Rahab
One day, the people of Jericho saw Salmon and the other spy in Rahab’s house. “Those people seem suspicious. They must be spies from Israel. Let’s report it to the king.”
The king of Jericho sent soldiers to Rahab’s house.
‘Bang, bang, bang!’
“Open the door! Hurry up, open it now!”
The spies thought, ‘Oh, no, we are dead.’ Then, Rahab spoke. “Follow me quietly! Hurry!” The two hurriedly followed Rahab up to the roof.
“Quickly, lay down here!”
When they laid down, Rahab quickly covered them with stalks of flax. It clearly looked like the stalks of flax were being dried in the sun. Rahab walked over to the door with quick, short steps.
“We know everything, so hurry up and open this door!”
“Alright. I am coming.”
When the bars were removed from the door, the soldiers dashed inside. The captain asked Rahab.
“Weren’t there strangers here? Where are they?”
“Oh, those strange people? They were here until a little while ago. They asked me what time the gate of the land closes, and when I said 6 o’clock, they ran out towards the gate. Hurry, go after them.”
The soldiers ran out and ordered the gates to be shut.
Salmon and Rahab, the Harlot
After the soldiers left, Rahab locked the door and went up to the roof.
“Now you can rest easy because the soldiers all left.”
Salmon was very grateful to Rahab.
“Rahab, I thought about this a lot while hiding under the stalks of flax; why did you help us?”
Rahab said, “I knew who you two were at first glance. You are spies from Israel, aren’t you? I know all about God helping your people by drying up water of the Red Sea when you came out of Egypt, helping you through the wilderness, and destroying the Amorites. I even know that this time, it’s Jericho. I have saved you two, so please promise me that you will also save my family.”
“Okay, we promise. When we invade Jericho, gather everyone in this room and hang a scarlet thread in the window for us to see clearly. This is same as avoiding the judgment on Passover by painting the doorpost with blood. Anyone who stays in the house with this scarlet thread will not die.”
Salmon thanked God for protecting him by preparing Rahab, the harlot. The two climbed down the town wall by a rope and safely returned to Joshua and they spoke about how God had protected them in Jericho.
The Promise of the Scarlet Thread
When the day has finally come, the Israelites gathered and walked around Jericho seven times. And when the people shouted out loud together, the great and strong walls of Jericho city collapsed. Salmon ran to Rahab’s house as fast as he could. “Salmon, the scarlet thread is here!”
Rahab and Salmon greeted each other happily.
We’re saved now!” All of Rahab’s family were waiting inside the house that had the scarlet thread. They were all saved as promised.
Not long after, Salmon married Rahab. Rahab gave birth to her son and named him Boaz. Then Boaz had Obed, Obed had Jesse, and Jesse had David. Among David’s greatest ancestors was Salmon.
God’s Work in Hardships
Since last year, the entire world has been suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people have been ill, many have died, and many are still trembling in fear. However, amid all this, I am very grateful that the gospel is being spread to many countries around the world through God’s grace. Most of all, though we’ve had hardships, it was a year that I am grateful to God that helped us.
Now the year 2020 has gone and the new year arrived. What will happen in the new year? Just as God had prepared Rahab to help Salmon when he went into Jericho, He will help and protect you when you have difficulties. And in the new year, He will continue to spread the good news of salvation.
