King Ahasuerus and Esther
왕 앞에 나아간 에스더
에스더 5장에 에스더와 아하수에로 왕의 이야기가 나옵니다. 에스더는 하만이 자기 민족인 유다인들을 모 두 죽일 계략을 세운 것을 알고 괴로워하다가 왕을 찾아갔습니다. 그런데 그 나라 법에는 왕이 부르지도 않았는데 왕에게 나아가면 죽이는 법이 있었습니다. 만일에 왕이 그 사람을 불쌍히 여겨서 금홀을 내밀면 살 수 있지만, 법대로라면 곧바로 죽는 위험한 일이었습니다.
에스더가 왕궁 안 뜰에 갔을 때, 마침 아하수에로 왕이 문을 향해 앉아 있다가 문이 열리는 것을 보았습니다.
‘누구지? 내가 아무도 부르지 않았는데 문을 열고 들어오는 저 사람이 누구야?’
아하수에로 왕은 왕비 에스더가 들어오는 것을 보고 깜짝 놀랐습니다.
‘왕비 에스더가 무슨 일이지? 왕 비도 내가 부르지 않았는데 오면 죽는다는 것을 잘 알 텐데, 무슨 일일까?’
왕은 얼른 금홀을 내밀었고 에스더가 가까이 가서 금홀 끝을 잡았습니다. 왕이 에스더에게 물었습니다. “왕후 에스더여, 그대의 소원이 무엇이며 요구가 무엇이냐? 나라의 절반이라도 그대에게 주겠노라.”
“오늘 제가 왕을 위해 잔치를 준 비했습니다. 왕이 선히 여기시거든 하만과 함께 오십시오.”
“그래, 좋다. 여봐라. 하만을 급히 부르라!”
에스더를 향한 왕의 마음
왕은 하만과 함께 에스더가 베푼 잔치에 갔습니다. 잔치 자리에 술이 오고가는데 왕은 술이나 잔치에 관 심이 없었습니다.
‘왕비에게 무슨 일이 있는 것이 틀림없어. 그렇지 않고서야 목숨을 걸고 안뜰에 들어올 리가 없지.’
왕이 다시 에스더에게 물었습니다.
“그대의 소청이 무엇이냐? 내가 곧 허락하겠다. 그대의 요구가 무엇이냐? 나라의 절반이라도 주겠다.”
그러자 에스더가 대답했습니다.
“내일 한 번 더 제가 준비한 잔치에 와주십시오. 내일은 말씀드리겠 습니다.”
그렇게 그날 잔치가 끝났습니다. 왕은 자기 왕궁으로 돌아갔습니다. 그런데 왕비 에스더가 무슨 일로 자신을 찾아왔는지 궁금하고 걱정이 되어 잠이 오지 않았습니다.
‘왕비에게 무슨 중대한 일이 생겼기에 목숨을 걸고 나를 찾아왔을까? 내가 명색이 왕인데 왕비를 보호해주지 못해서 되겠는가.’
왕의 마음을 살핀 에스더
그런데 하만은 왕의 마음과 달랐습니다. 집으로 돌아가 아내와 친구들에게 말했습니다.
“왕이 다른 신하들보다 나를 가장 높였다네. 왕후 에스더가 왕과 함께 오라고 초대한 사람은 나밖에 없었다니까. 내일도 왕과 함께 초대를 받았어. 하하하!”
왕은 왕비의 문제 때문에 근심이 가득한데, 하만은 자기가 인정받고 세움을 받는 것 때문에 기쁨이 가득 했습니다. 그렇게 하만은 왕과 마음이 달랐습니다. 성경 에스더의 다음 장에서 하만은 비참하게 죽임을 당하고 맙니다. 하나님의 마음과 우리 마음은 차이가 납니다. 그래서 우리가 성경을 펴서 하나님의 마음이 어떤지 찾아야 합니다. 하나님의 마음을 정확히 알아서 하나님과 마음을 같이 할 때 하나님이 기뻐하시는 사람이 되는 것입니다. 에스더는 왕의 명령도 없었는데 아하수에로 왕 앞에 나아갔습니다. 에스더는 하나님을 믿고 왕을 믿은 것입니다.
‘하나님이 나를 도우실 거야. 왕이 나에게 은혜를 베푸실 거야.’
하나님의 마음을 더듬고 왕과 마음이 같았던 에스더는 자기도 살고 모든 유다인들을 살리는 귀한 일을 했습니다.
하나님의 마음을 알 때
요한복음 3장 16절에 “하나님이 세 상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주 셨으니”라는 구절이 있습니다. 우 리를 위해 하나밖에 없는 아들을 주신 하나님은 우리에게 아끼시는 것이 없습니다. 세상 사람들이 다 구 원받기를 원하시고 모두에게 은혜 베풀기를 원하십니다. 그런데 우리가 ‘하나님이 나는 돕지 않으실 거 야. 내가 잘한 게 없어서 하나님이 나를 좋아하지 않으실 거야’ 하는 다른 마음을 가질 때가 많습니다.
나는 구원받기 전에 정말 형편없는 사람이었습니다. 조그마한 어려움을 만나도 근심하고 염려했습니다. 그런데 하나님은 내가 못난 것을 보지 않으셨습니다. 오히려 나를 사랑하셔서 은혜를 입혀주셨습니다. 아하수에로 왕이 에스더를 걱정하는 마음에 잠을 못 이룬 것처럼, 하나님은 우리를 위해 은혜를 베풀기를 원하십니다. 우리가 성경을 읽으며 그러한 하나님의 마음을 알고 하나님께 나아가면, 하나님이 우리의 왕이 되셔서 우리를 위해 일하시는 것을 경험할 수 있습니다.
Esther Coming to the King
The book of Esther chapter 5 in the Bible tells the story of Queen Esther and King Ahasuerus. Esther was very worried when she learned that Haman had plotted to kill all of her people, the Jews, and went to see the king. However, according to the laws of that country, if someone comes to see the king without being called for by him, they would be killed. If the king had pity on them and held out his golden scepter, then that person could live, but if not, then based on the law, that person would be killed immediately. Esther went to the inner court of the king’s palace. King Ahasuerus was sitting facing the door when he saw it begin to open.
‘Who is that? I didn't call for anyone. Who is that person opening the door and entering?’
King Ahasuerus was shocked to see Queen Esther coming through the door.
‘What brought Queen Esther here? Surely, she knows she would die if she came without my calling for her, so why did she come in?’
The king quickly held out the golden scepter. Esther approached and touched the end of the scepter. The king asked.
“Queen Esther, what wilt thou and what is thy request? It shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom.”
“I have prepared a banquet this day for the king. If it seem good unto the king, let the king come with Haman.”
“Yes, I accept. Call over Haman quickly!”
The King’s Heart for Esther
The king and Haman went to Esther's feast. Wine was given at the feast, but the king had no interest in the drink or the feast.
‘The queen must have a serious problem. Otherwise, she wouldn't have risked her life to enter the courtyard.’
The king asked Esther again.
“What is thy petition? I shall grant it. What is thy request? Even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed.”
Then Esther answered.
“Tomorrow, please come again to the banquet I will prepare for you. I will tell you tomorrow.”
When the feast ended, the king returned to his palace. However, he could not sleep because he wondered and worried about what troubled Queen Esther so much that she had to come to him. ‘What has happened to the queen that she risked her life to come to me? My title is king, but it’s useless if I cannot protect my queen.’
Esther Following the King’ s Heart
But Haman had a different heart than the king. He went home and told his wife and friends,
“The king exalted me above all the other servants. I was the only one Queen Esther invited to come with the king. I even got invited tomorrow again with the king. Hahaha!”
The king’s heart was full of worry about his queen’s problems, but Haman’s was full of joy because he had been recognized and exalted. That was the difference between Haman’s heart and the king’s. In the next chapter of Esther in the Bible, Haman was executed pitifully. There is a difference between God’s heart and our hearts. That is why we must open the Bible and find out what His heart is like. When you know God’s heart precisely and make your heart one with Him, you become a person that God is pleased with. Esther went before King Ahasuerus without the king’s command, but she believed in God and believed in the king.
‘God will help me. The king will be gracious to me.’
Esther, who followed the heart of God and had one heart with the king, did the precious work of saving herself and the lives of all the Jews.
When You Know the Heart of God
There is a verse in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son…” God, who gave his one and only Son for us, spares nothing for us. He wants all people in the world to be saved and He wants to give grace to everyone. But there are many times we have a different heart from God and say, ‘God will not help me. God will not like me because I haven’t done anything well.’ Before I was saved, I was a really terrible person. Even when faced with small difficulties, I was troubled and worried. But God did not see my poor side. Rather, he loved me and blessed me. Just as King Ahasuerus gave grace to Queen Esther when he held out the golden scepter to her, God wants to pour his grace on us. When we read the Bible, know God’s heart, and come to God, we can experience God working for us as our King.
