The Great Woman of Shunem
선지자를 섬긴 수넴 여자
엘리사 선지자는 이스라엘 전국을 다니며 말씀을 전하고 사람들을 만나 어려운 문제들을 해결해주었습 니다. 그 당시는 차가 있는 것도 아니고 비행기가 있는 것도 아니어서 이스라엘 곳곳을 다니는 것이 쉽지 않았습니다.
엘리사 선지자가 수넴이라는 마을에 갔습니다. 엘리사가 그곳에 갈 때마다 음식을 대접해주는 여자 가 있었습니다. 하루는 여자가 남편에게 말했습니다.
“항상 이곳을 지나가시는 엘리사 선지자님은 하나님의 거룩한 사람이에요. 그러니 우리가 그분을 위해 담 위에 작은 방을 마련해서 침상과 책상과 의자와 촛대를 두는 게 어때요? 선지자님이 이곳에 오시면 그 방에서 지내시게 해요.”
여자의 남편은 늙었기 때문에 산에 가서 나무를 베어 오는 것이 쉽지 않았습니다. 그렇지만 아내의 말을 따라 엘리사 선지자를 위한 방을 만들었습니다. 엘리사가 방에 들어가 보니 침상도 있고, 책상과 걸상과 촛대도 있어서 성경을 읽기도 좋고, 글을 쓰기도 좋고, 기도하기도 좋았습니다.
수넴 여자를 도우신 하나님
엘리사가 사환 게하시를 시켜 여자를 불러 말했습니다.
“네가 우리를 위하여 생각이 주밀하도다. 내가 너를 위하여 어떻게 하랴? 왕에게나 군대장관에게 무슨 구할 것이 있느냐?”
그러자 여자가 대답했습니다.
“아닙니다. 저는 하나님의 백성 중에 거하는 것만으로도 정말 감사합니다.”
수넴 여자가 돌아간 뒤, 엘리사 가 게하시에게 물었습니다.
“저 여자를 위하여 무엇을 해줄까?” “선지자님, 저 여인은 아들이 없고, 남편은 늙었나이다.”
엘리사가 여자를 다시 불러 말했습니다.
“돌이 되면 네가 아들을 안으리라.”
그동안 이 여자는 아이를 가지고 싶었지만 생기지 않았고, 남편은 늙었기 때문에 아이 갖는 것을 포기하고 있었습니다. 그런 자신에게 아들을 안는다는 것은 말이 안 되는 소리였습니다. 그래서 여자가 말했습니다. “아닙니다. 내 주 하나님의 사람이여, 당신의 계집종을 속이지 마옵소서.”
그런데 여자가 정말로 잉태하였고 일 년이 지나 엘리사의 말대로 아들을 낳았습니다.
그 후 아이가 갑자기 죽었을 때 엘리사가 아이를 살려주었습니다. 또 여자가 기근을 당해 먼 나라에 갔다가 돌아왔을 때에 엘리사 선지자 덕분에 재산을 되찾을 수 있었습 니다. 수넴 여자가 하나님의 사람에게 마음을 쏟은 만큼 하나님도 여자를 사랑해서 오래도록 그를 지키고 도우신 것을 볼 수 있습니다.
하나님을 생각할수록
우리 마음이 하나님과 가까우면 하나님을 향한 생각이 깊어집니다. ‘하나님은 어떻게 생각하실까?’ 하고 하나님을 생각할 때, 어떤 일을 해야겠다는 마음이 생깁니다. 우리가 하나님께 가까이 가면 갈수록, 수넴 여자가 엘리사를 위해 ‘음식을 준비해야겠다, 쉴 곳을 마련해 드려야겠다’ 했던 것처럼 하나님을 위해서 무엇을 해야겠다는 생각이 듭니다. ‘친구에게 복음을 전해야겠다’, ‘내가 용돈이 부족하지만 그래도 하나님께 헌금을 해야겠다’는 마음이 일어납니다. 우리가 자기중심 적인 마음을 가지고 있다가, 하나님을 생각하는 동안 우리 마음이 하나님으로 점점 채워집니다. 그렇게 되면 병이 걸렸을 때나 어려운 일을 당했을 때 자연스럽게 하나님을 의지하게 됩니다.
그런데 어떤 학생은 공부나 노는 일로 머리가 복잡하고 바쁩니다. 자연히 하나님을 생각하는 것은 얼마 되지 않습니다. 예배 시간에 들 은 말씀도 얼마 지나지 않아 잊어 버리고 삽니다. 그러다가 어려움이 닥치면 정신을 차리지 못하고 어려움에 빠지는 경우가 많습니다.
틈이 날 때마다 기도한 대로
내가 거창 장팔리에서 복음을 전하고 있을 때 군대 영장이 나왔습니다. 나는 1년 후에 군대 갈 것을 생각하며 틈이 날 때마다 기도했습니다.
“하나님, 상관들에게 은혜를 입게 해주십시오. 동료들에게, 후배들에게도 은혜를 입게 해주십시오.”
그 후 입대해 원주 통신훈련소에서 교육을 받았습니다. 교육을 마치고 그 부대를 떠나야 했지만, 교육장교가 내가 예배 인도하는 것을 보고 감동을 받아서 그 부대 고시과에서 일하게 해주었습니다. 그래서 통신훈련소에서 군 생활을 하며 예배를 인도하고 복음을 전할 수 있었습니다. 나는 부대에서 지내는 동안 예수님이 계셔서 행복했습니다. 제대하고 부대 정문을 나올 때 ‘이런 하나님이 나와 함께 계시면 사하라사막에서도 살겠다’는 마음을 가졌습니다.
하나님과 가까운 사람
참된 신앙생활을 하는 사람은 예배 시간이나 성경을 읽는 시간이 아니어도 하나님의 일을 생각합니 다. 그런 사람은 마음에서 하나님 을 위해 일하고 싶은 마음이 일어 나고, 그 일을 하면 열매가 맺히며, 하나님과 더 가까워져서 문제를 만나면 하나님을 의지합니다. 크고 작은 모든 문제를 하나님께 맡겨 하나님의 은혜를 입으며 사는 것입 니다.
The Shunammite Woman Who Served the Prophet
The prophet Elisha traveled all over Israel, preaching the word, meeting with people, and solving difficult problems. There were no cars or airplanes at that time, so visiting all the places in Israel was not easy.
The prophet Elisha went to a village called Shunem. There was a woman who served him food whenever he went there. One day, the woman said to her husband.
“The prophet Elisha, who passes by us continually, is a holy man of God. How about we build a little room for him along the back wall with a bed, a table, a chair, and a candlestick? Whenever he comes here, he can stay in that room.”
The woman’s husband was old, so it was not easy for him to go up the mountains to cut down trees. However, he listened to his wife and made a small room for the prophet Elisha.
When Elisha entered the room, he found that he had a bed, a table, a chair, and a candlestick which was very convenient for him to read the Bible, write, and pray.
God Helped the Shunammite Woman
Elisha had his servant Gehazi call for the woman and asked her,
“Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host?”
Then she answered.
“No. I am grateful to be among God’s own people.”
After the Shunammite woman left, Elisha asked Gehazi what could be done for her.
“This woman has no child and her husband is old.”
Elisha called for the woman again and said,
“About this season, thou shalt embrace a son.”
The woman had always wanted to have children but she couldn’t, so she had given up because her husband was old. It was nonsense for her to hear that she would get to hold a son. So she answered. “Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid.”
But the woman did conceive, and one year later she gave birth to a son, as Elisha had said.
Later, when the child suddenly died, Elisha came and saved him.
Also, when the land suffered a famine, the woman went to a distant country and when she came back, she was able to regain her fortune thanks to the prophet Elisha. We can see that as much as the Shunammite woman used her heart to serve the man of God, God also loved her; He helped and protected her for a long time.
The More We Think About God
When our hearts are close to God, our thoughts toward God deepen. We have a desire to do something when we think, ‘What will God think?’. The closer we get to God, just like the Shunammite woman thought for Elisha, ‘I need to prepare food and a place to rest’, we also have a heart of doing something for God. We have a heart that rises in us, ‘I need to preach the gospel to my friends’, ‘I don’t have enough pocket money, but I need to give offerings to God.’ We have a self-centered heart, but while we think about God, our heart gradually fills with Him. That way, when we are ill or have difficulties, we will naturally depend on God.
However, some students have a busy mind with studying or playing. So naturally, they don’t think much about God. The sermon they hear during the service does not live long in them. Then, when difficulties come, they often lose their minds and fall into those hardships.
I Prayed Whenever I Had Time
When I was preaching the gospel in Jangpalli, Geochang, I received an army draft notice. I prayed whenever I had free time, thinking that I will go into the army the following year.
“God, grant me the favor of my superiors. Also of my colleagues and juniors as well.”
When I entered the army, I received training at the Wonju Communication Training Center. I had to leave the unit after completing the training, but the education officer was moved when he saw me leading the worship service, so he allowed me to work in the unit's examination department. That is how I was able to lead the service and spread the gospel while serving in the military at the Communication Training Center. I was happy in the army because Jesus was there with me. As I walked out of the main gate of the unit after being discharged, I thought, ‘If such a God is with me, I could even live in the Sahara Desert.”
Those Who are Close to God
A person who lives a true life of faith thinks about God's work even when it is not during worship or Bible reading time. Such a person has a desire to work for God in their heart. They bear fruit when they do those works and become closer to God so when they encounter problems, they rely on Him. They live by His grace by entrusting all their problems, big and small, to God.
