God Who Opened Saul’s Eyes Anew
사울은 왜 예수님 믿는 사람들을 핍박했을까
예수님이 부활하신 뒤, 예수님의 제자들은 사람들에게 예수님이 부활하신 사실을 전했습니다. 그때 사울이 생각했습니다.
“예수가 부활했다고? 말도 안 돼. 사람이 어떻게 죽었다가 다시 살아나? 세상을 혼란스럽게 하는 자들을 잡아다 옥에 가두어야겠다.”
사울은 왜 예수님을 믿는 사람들을 핍박했을까요? 사울은 자기 생각을 크게 여기는 사람이었습니다. 자기를 믿는 마음이 없었다면 ‘예수가 부활했다고? 어떻게 된 일인지 알아봐야겠다’고 생각했을 것입니다. 그래서 제자들을 불러서 “너희는 왜 매를 맞으면서도 예수를 믿느냐? 너희는 예수님을 믿고 평안하냐? 좀 더 자세히 얘기해보아라.” 하고 예수님에 대해서 알 수 있었을 것입니다. 그런데 사울은 자기 생각, 자기 주관을 가지고 있었기 때문에 알아보지도 않고 제자들을 잡아서 옥에 가두고 괴롭게 했습니다.
자신의 생각이 틀린 것을 발견한 사울
하루는 사울이 다메섹 회당에 가서 예수를 믿는 사람들을 예루살렘으로 잡아오기로 했습니다. 다메섹 근처에 이르렀을 때, 갑자기 하늘에서 빛이 둘러 비쳤습니다. 사울은 놀라 땅바닥에 엎드러졌습니다. 그때 소리가 들렸습니다.
“사울아, 사울아! 네가 어찌하여 나를 핍박하느냐?”
“주여, 누구십니까?”
“나는 네가 핍박하는 예수라.”
사울은 깜짝 놀랐습니다.
‘예수님이라고요? 정말 예수님이 살아계셨네요! 나는 그리스도인들이 거짓말로 백성들을 현혹해서 잘못된 길로 인도하는 거라고 생각했습니다. 내가 제대로 알아보지도 않고 그리스도인들을 죽이고 핍박했네요.’
사울은 비로소 자신의 생각이 틀린 것을 알았습니다. 하나님이 사울의 마음을 바꿔주신 것입니다.
복음을 전하는 사울
예수님이 또 말씀하셨습니다.
“네가 일어나 성으로 들어가라. 행할 것을 네게 이를 자가 있느니라.”
그때 사울은 앞을 볼 수 없게 되었습니다. 그래서 사람들의 부축을 받아 예수님이 말씀하신 대로 성으로 들어갔습니다. 그곳에서 아나니야라는 제자를 만났습니다. 아나니야가 사울의 머리에 손을 얹고 기도를 하자 사울의 눈에서 비늘 같은 것이 벗어져 다시 앞을 볼 수 있게 되었습니다. 사울은 그곳에서 상담을 받으며 건강해졌고, 예수님을 전하는 사람이 되었습니다.
사울이 복음 전하는 것을 보고 사람들이 깜짝 놀랐습니다.
“저 사람은 그리스도인들을 괴롭히던 사람 아니냐?”
“맞아! 여기에 온 것도 예수님 믿는 사람들을 잡아서 끌고 가려고 한 거래.”
“그런데 어떻게 저렇게 변했지?”
“사울이 우리를 잡으러 오는 길에 예수님을 만났대.”
“그래? 하나님이 일하셨구나! 우리는 할 수 있는 게 아무것도 없었는데, 하나님이 우리 가운데 살아계시네.”
사람들이 너무나 기뻐했을 것입니다.
우리가 꼭 알아야 하는 것
어느 날, 나는 나에 의해서 삶이 이 루어지는 것이 아니라는 사실을 알 았습니다.
‘나는 돈을 벌 줄 몰라서 굶어야 하는데 오늘도 식사를 했어. 나는 들이나 길에서 자야 할 사람인데, 좋은 방에서 자고 있구나. 누가 나에게 음식을 주었지? 누가 나를 따뜻한 방에서 자게 해주었지? 이건 예수님이 주신 거야. 예수님이 다해주신 거야.’
나는 아무것도 아닌 사람인데 예수님이 나를 불쌍히 여기시고 나를 도우시는 것을 봤습니다. 그때부터 예수님이 내 삶에서 커졌습니다. 사람들은 이러한 것을 모르고 사울처럼 자기 생각을 가지고 자기 인생을 삽니다.
우리가 꼭 알아야 하는 것은 우리가 병이 들거나 슬픈 일을 만났을 때 그것을 가장 잘 아는 분은 하나님이라는 사실입니다. 하나님은 정확하게 우리 삶을 이끌어 가십니다. 하나님을 믿는다는 것은 성경 말씀을 믿는 걸 뜻합니다. 그리고 우리 삶 속에서 살아 일하시는 하나님을 믿는 것을 말합니다. 그런데 여러분이 슬플 때, 여러분이 괴로울 때, 여러분이 아플 때 하나님을 믿지 않고, 하나님을 부르지 않으면 하나님이 얼마나 섭섭하시겠습니까?
“아들아, 내가 너의 아버지잖아. 딸아, 내가 널 위해 일하잖아. 왜 나를 의지하지 않아?” 하고 말씀하실 것입니다.
전깃불이 들어오면 어두움이 도망가듯이
우리는 그리스도 안에서 새로운 피조물이 되었습니다. 여러분이 여러분의 삶을 좋게 하려고 애쓰지 마십시오. 여러분의 문제를 여러분이 해결하려고 걱정하지 마십시오. 마치 어두운 방에 전깃불이 들어오면 어두움이 다 도망가듯이, 예수님이 우리 마음 안에 들어오신 뒤에는 걱정이나 슬픔이나 원망이 머물지 못하고 도망갑니다. 그 예수님을 크게 여기고 예수님을 의지하여 살기를 바랍니다.
Why Did Saul Persecute Those Who Believed in Jesus?
After Jesus resurrected, His dis- ciples preached to the people about His resurrection. But Saul had the thought, “Jesus resurrected? Non- sense. How can a man die and come back to life? I will catch those who are confusing the world and put them in prison.”
Why did Saul persecute those who believed in Jesus? It was be- cause he was a man who believed his thoughts were right. If he had not had a heart to believe in himself, he would have said, ‘Jesus resur- rected? I have to find out what hap- pened,’ and he would have looked for Jesus' disciples and asked them, “Why do you believe in Jesus in spite of being beaten? Are you at peace believing in Jesus? Tell me more about it.” Then, he would have known more about Jesus. But Saul had his own thoughts and philosophy, so without researching more, he seized the disciples, put them in prison, and tormented them.
Saul Realized That His Own Thought Was Wrong
One day, Saul wanted to go to the synagogues in Damascus to capture those who believed in Jesus to Jeru- salem. As he came near Damascus, suddenly there shone round about him a light from heaven. Saul fell to the ground in surprise. Then he heard a voice.
“Saul, Saul! Why persecutest thou me?”
“Lord, who are you?”
“I am Jesus whom thou persecut- est.”
Saul was astonished.
‘Jesus? Jesus is really alive! I thought the Christians were mis- leading the people by deceiving them with lies. I killed and perse- cuted Christians without even look- ing into it properly.’
Saul finally realized that his way of thinking was wrong. God had changed Saul’s heart.
Saul Preaching the Gospel
Jesus spoke again.
“Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.”
Saul had become unable to see, so the men who were with him led him by the hand into the city just as Jesus had told him to. There he met a disciple named Ananias. Ananias put his hands on Saul's head and prayed, and immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he was able to see again. Saul had fellowship there and became healthy, and he became a preacher of Jesus.
When people saw Saul preaching the gospel, they were amazed.
“Isn’t he the one who tormented Christians?”
“That's right! The reason why he came here was to catch people who believed in Jesus and drag them away.”
“But how did he change like that?”
“Saul met Jesus while he was on the way here to catch us.”
“Really? God worked! There was nothing we could do, but God is alive among us.”
Everyone must have been very happy.
What We Must Know
One day, I realized that my life was not under my control.
‘I should have starved since I don’t know how to earn money, but I had food today. I should be sleep- ing in the field or on the streets, but I’m sleeping in a nice room. Who gave me food to eat? Who gave me a warm room to sleep in? These are what Jesus gave me. Jesus did it all.’
I am a nobody, but I have seen Jesus have compassion on me and help me. Since then, Jesus has grown in my life. People do not know these things and live their lives with their own thoughts like Saul did.
What we must know is that when we get sick or when something sad happens to us, it is God who knows best how to take care of it. God pre- cisely directs our lives. To believe in God means to believe the words of the Bible and it means believing in God who lives and works in our lives. But when you are sad, when you are distressed, when you are in pain, if you do not believe in God and do not call on Him, how sad would He be? God will say, “Son, I am your father. Daughter, I work for you. Why don’t you rely on me?”
Just As Darkness Flees When Light Enters
We are new creatures in Christ. Don’t try to make your life better yourself. Don’t worry about trying to solve your problems. Just like when light enters a dark room, the darkness flees; after Jesus enters into our hearts, our worries, sor- rows, and resentments cannot stay and will all run away. I hope that you will regard Jesus highly and live your life depending on Him.
